Amazonat Lodge
Our base camp, Amazonat Jungle Lodge, is situated in a clearing of a terra firme secondary forest with many facilities our guests can enjoy; Janes Place, our jungle survival camp, is in the primary forest, allowing deeper jungle exploration for the more adventurous; and our soon to be opened Amazonat River Lodge will offer spacious accommodations in an idyllic riverside location. Visitors can stay at one or more of our locations and choose a package to suit their interests and length of stay. We are also happy to design a customized package with our guests to suit individual interests. All constructions in Amazonat are built with the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) smartwood label. We are the only lodge in Brazil that is fully registered with the FSC. The northern part of the project is located near the AM 10, a jungle road that connects Manaus to the town of Itacoatiara, a stretch of 150 miles. The road stops at Itacoatiara. This sparsely driven road enables a fast transfer to Manaus and the three river systems nearby. The Amazon and the Rio Preta da Eva rivers mark the southern extreme of the property. It can be reached by river and by road. The boat trip generally takes 6 hours, followed by an additional 30 minutes by bus. The direct bus trip to the lodge takes less than 2 hours. The acidity of the water in this region inhibits the proliferation of viruses and mosquitoes. Stays at Amazonat Jungle Lodge can be considered mosquito free! For these reasons the lodge is situated in
a unique location known for the presence of a pristine, diverse and impressive
dry forest (Terra Firme). This dry forest contains many unknown and un-described
tree and plant species, far away from the civilized world. From the lodge
various expeditions are undertaken in combination with three (3) river
systems at hand: The strength of the Amazonat Formula is due to the combined packages of dry forest, black water rivers and the huge Amazon that readily demonstrate the principally different ecosystems supported by these rivers. You will be introduced to the poor but photogenic black waters (poor in terms of nutrients and life forms) and to the wealthy Amazon river with its staggering abundance of wildlife. This combination enables the lodge to present a programming that guarantees a high level of educational, adventure and amusement value. The initiative for operating a "Genuine Eco Lodge "with activities performed in a region that has not be explored by other tourist initiatives and where the guest is introduced, on small scale basis in a most authentic Amazonian way of life on a high educative level, has been rewarded a 3 star nomination by Frommer's travel guide (the highest award given to a lodge in the Amazon region) and high recommendations of the International Ecotourism Organization. Amazonat offers a number of attractions that allow first-time visitors and new arrivals to adjust in a relaxed way to the jungle environment. You may wish to spend your first day at the resort unwinding at the swimming pool or the lake beach, walking through the orchid park, visiting Bertha's pond, bird-watching, exercising at our fitness stations, or getting a relaxing massage. The small swimming pool is located a stone's-throw from the restaurant, adjacent to the palm grove, and has a spectacular view of the valley and the jungle beyond. The orchid park thrives in a tract of second-generation forest near the chalets. It contains over 1000 orchid plants of many types. There is always something in bloom from April through August. The orchids are planted in the same way in which they occur in nature, so the visitor must be alert in order to spot all the flowers. The paths leading through the orchid park give the visitor a feeling for the jungle trails that will be explored later with an experienced guide. Bird watching can be done just about anywhere, but is especially pleasant in the orchid park (where benches have been installed for the purpose) and from the chalet verandas. Since the creation of the lake, moreover, a number of water birds have been observed in addition to the original populations. Amazonat Jungle Resort offers a number of indoor and outdoor activities to help you experience nature's rhythms, thrills and dreams. Daily Walk - Every morning after breakfast, guests can choose to walk on one of three main jungle trails in the company of our experienced guides. The trails go deep into the virgin jungle: only a minimum of vegetation has been removed, allowing you to walk safely . Foot protection is strongly recommended.
Janes Place provides basic but comfortable accommodations. Guests sleep in hammocks and get a sense of how the indigenous people sleep. You will be surprised how comfortable and relaxing it is! Just lay back and let the frogs and crickets sing you to sleep. Janes Place sleeps 16 guests in hammocks suspended over one of two decks. The guest bathroom is near the main building and is operated with a manual hand pump. Kerosene lamps provide light at night. Mosquitoes are not a problem here most of the year since the low acidity of the blackwater stream inhibits their proliferation. In the peak of the rainy season (April) however, there are some present here (not at the Lodge) for about two weeks. Insect repellent is recommended as the best protection. Food is brought from Amazonat Jungle Lodge. Safe drinking mineral water is obtained from the nearby stream. For those spending the night we will maintain their
rooms at Amazonat Jungle Lodge where they can safely leave their belongings.
Guests staying for more nights can leave their extra luggage conveniently
stored away in a locker at Amazonat Jungle Lodge until their return.
There are also locked storage facilities at Janes Place if needed.
In order to preserve this pristine location, maximum
attention is paid to collecting and disposing of waste properly and
enjoying the surroundings in a non-destructive way. Guests are asked
to be especially aware of our philosophy to take only memories
(and photographs) and leave only footsteps. "We were very pleased at the Amazonat
Lodge. They treated us like we were the only persons there. Like a KING
& QUEEN. It was my 65th birthday - they found it out - had a large
cake for us and it was enough that we could treat all the guests. AND
WAS IT EVER GOOD. The meals there were wonderful - tastly and attractive.
Again, Thank you for all you did for us. We all four came home, and
said - "There is not one thing we would change about our trip"
That is being very pleased." - Mable Other activities outside Amazonat Jungle Resort Urubu River Trips - The Urubu River, one of the Amazon's main tributaries, is 15 minutes away from Amazonat by our air-conditioned bus. It is famous for its natural beauty, and surrounded by pristine forest. Many creeks, inlets and islands add variety to the landscape. As elsewhere in this region, there are practically no mosquitos due to the relative acidity of the water.
Amazon river - Highlight for every visitor to our lodge will be the Amazon river trip. Due to the trully unique location of our lodge we are able to show the guests two different waterworlds in one river. Going by the black water dominated northern riverbank (black due to the discharge of the Urubu river) we see an abundance of birds in a mosquito free surrealistic landscape. We will visit the Vitora Regia, the giant waterlily , which is growing here in large numbers. While crossing the huge river , the visitor will witness a second phenomena of black water running side by side with the muddy Amazon river flow , with the opportunity to meet many dolphins including the pink one. Once on the other side, the south bank , one can take notice of the very rich Varzea , with the presence of wildlife , thousands of Egrets and or other exotic birds, huge alligators and an incredable variety of fish. We leave this place before dark, because in this white water dominated world mosquitos are thriving. Adventurous and Survival Trips Most of these extendable trips are initiated within the parameters of the lodge. Depending the duration of the package these trips are following one of the many small streams leading to the Urubu river in canoes where the activities are to be continued ,while return to the lodge is by foot or bike. Our survival treks are principally based on the same principle, it is however the intention that the traveller will , with a very basic daily provision, have to catch fish under experienced supervision by one of more of our Indian guides. Island Survival, In the very photogenetic Urubú
river which its fantastic panoramic sceneries Amazonat Jungle Lodge
ownes a small ( 50 hectares ) private island. This property is located
in a Indigenous Reserve . Guests preferring to spend more days in absolute
tranquility with guaranteed unforgettable moments , will find in this
location the real Amazonian dream. From here expeditions , by land or
by canoe , are undertaken to explore life in and near the river.
Potable water in the apartments comes from the mineral water source of the lodge. This water is of the purest quality and 100% safe to drink. The lodge sells bottled mineral water, too. Restaurant - The Araras restaurant has been built in the classical indigenous style; completely open, with a thatched roof that is made from more than 3.500 palm leaves. The restaurant is the place to meet-up and chat with your fellow guests. The kitchen serves local and international specialties, including vegetarian meals. We are especially proud of our kitchen, since it is frequently praised by visitors from all over the world. Rather than a fixed menu, we offer a choice of two or three entrées that vary daily, based on what is available ... we only use fresh ingredients. Exposition/Reception Building - Our guests are received in the central building that has been named after the Mura, a vanished tribe that used to live in this region. Besides the administration, the building houses a small souvenir shop and an Internet café. To demonstrate the specifics of the lodge a permanent exposition contains a display of archeological objects found during the construction of the lodge, an explanation of the scientific research performed at the lodge and a stand from the Rainforest Alliance about the FSC philosophy regarding Sustainable Forest Management. Game House - Built on 10-meter high stilts and with the same technique used for the restaurant, the Game House offers entertainment for guests who stay for longer periods: a readers corner with a small library, television set with video and DVD presentations, pool-table and chess corner, all together with a panoramic view over part of the lodge. Shop - Beautiful t-shirts, carefully selected local arts and crafts and homeopathic products. Internet café Need to link up with the rest of the world? Here guests can check emails and consult the Internet. We also have a wireless connection for guests with their own electronic devices. Massage Corner - End a perfect day exploring and learning about the Amazon with a relaxing massage. Pamper yourself with a facial, manicure or pedicure. Do you fancy getting spoiled? Just let us know a day in advance and our specially trained therapist will come from Manaus especially for you. We had a fantastic holiday in the Amazon. Our tour guide Joseph had a real passion for his job and was always working even when he should have been relaxing. He just could not sit still, with either making new fishing lines or teaching us about insects and showing us other amazing facts about the Amazon. We were sad to leave as we were made to feel very welcome by the whole team. Jack too clearly has a great passion for what he does and is so well informed. It was great to see a different side of life and the Brazilian people were very warm and friendly in general! Yes we enjoyed it very much. It would be nice to think that Joseph will be rewarded for his hard work and efforts as we found him to be such an amiable and hardworking guy. If anyone visits the Amazon will definitely recommend your tour. - Maria Hanks Amazonat River Lodge Amazonat River Lodge rests on the edge of the blackwater Urubú River, to the south east of our reserve and close to a point where it flows into the Amazon River . It is located 50 km. (31 miles) or 50 minutes by car from Amazonat Jungle Lodge. Stays in this idyllic location provide visitors the opportunity to relax by the river while exploring its various ecosystems which are very different from those of the rainforest. We have chosen this unique location because of its pristine surroundings, untouched by deforestation in the surrounding 1000 hectares (2500 acres). Untouched riverbank locations are increasingly hard to find because deforestation is occurring most along the rivers. Amazonat River Lodge accommodates 20 guests on a double occupancy basis in spacious and comfortable rooms. Our lower deck has 8 deluxe rooms with a king size bed or separate twin beds and a double sofa bed. On the upper deck we have 2 honeymoon suites each with a king size bed, a double sofa bed and a large private terrace. As in Amazonat Jungle Lodge, all rooms have a private bathroom with a shower, a safe and wireless internet connection, are fully screened and have fans to keep the rooms cool. Nights, however, are cool and fresh due to the river. The acidity of the blackwater in the area inhibits mosquito larvae growth making your stay virtually mosquito free! Extending out of the lodge roof and reaching 10 meters (32 feet) above water level, our tower gives guests a 360-degree view of the beautiful surroundings. It is the perfect place for bird watching, especially at dawn and at dusk when thousands of birds fly over the river to nest or feed. Amazonat River Lodges riverside location makes this a haven for the water lover. Swimming in the crystalline amber waters of this blackwater river is safe and extremely pleasant. Kayaks will be available for paddling around or trying your fishing skills. Motorized canoes will be available for short expeditions to nearby islands or a small neighbouring indigenous community.
