Atacama Desert & Altiplano
The
Atacama desert stretches to the horizon and snow capped volcanoes
reach up high into a blue, blue sky. Take a walk in the valley of the
moon, enter a rustic church unchanged since the Spanish conquistadores
arrival, travel high into the Andes to enjoy hot springs and see the
geysers ? or relax and enjoy the seaside and surf. San Pedro de Atacama
is a small northern town with tremendous history and close proximity to
many natural geographical wonders. From the geysers of El Tatio to
the Valley of the Moon, from the ancient pre-Inca fortress Pucará
de Quitor to the mountain hot-springs of Puritama there are a host of
natural and historic wonders, which have brought travelers to San Pedro
for decades. Happily San Pedro remains unchanged with its unhurried,
dusty streets unaffected by the small uninterrupted flow of foreign travelers
who have come to experience something of the Atacama Desert.
The north of Chile is full of exotic landscapes,
supernatural colours and history.
The Altiplano sits next to the borders of Peru and Bolivia. Here you will
find the history of ancient civilizations with mummies four thousand
years old, natural wonders and fascinating landscapes for your adventure
walking, trekking, biking, or overlander. As one travels through this
land of snow-capped volcanoes and bizarre desert, one sees strange
sculpted rock formations and endless salt lakebeds where the crystallized
salts look like snow on the vast desert floor. Observe the pristine
lagoons of intense greenish-blue amidst the countryside of deep desert
brown. A striking pink flamingo flies slowly across an immense
blue sky. But come for more than just the scenery. Here there are cultures
to meet, ancient ruins preserved in open-air museums, and critters the
likes of which you will rarely see.
