Wine Region of Rio Grande do Sul

A 3 days self-drive tour starting from Porto Alegre to explore at your own pace the Wine Region in Serra Gaúcha! The picturesque Vale dos Vinhedos is located 120km northwest from Porto Alegre, in the Italian-influenced Serra Gaúcha. The best wines in Brazil are produced in this valley, especially those produced by the micro wineries that never reach the supermarkets. A strong immigrant culture is visible in the whole region, but make sure to visit the Caminho de Pedra route, where you can find many farmhouses from the 19th century with their typical stone cellars.

valedosvinhedos

Day 1

Arrival at Porto Alegre airport. A Meet & Greet service will be waiting to help your rental car and to give you directions. Drive from Porto Alegre to your gueshouse in Vale dos Vinhedos (Vineyards Valley) in Bento Gonçalves (120 km – Approximately 2 hours).

Colonia Dona Isabel, now the town of Bento Gonçalves, was founded in 1875 by Italian immigrants from the Veneto region in north Italy. The immigrants brought to the region many of their traditions, especially in wine making. Although the climate was very different from their native land, they managed to transform the region into the biggest wine producer in Brazil. For many years, the quality was not of international standard but in recent years innovative winemakers, especially those in Vale dos Vinhedos have created excellent wines that can be tasted in the local wineries.

The city itself lost most of its original buildings and charm but the rural areas are beautiful. The valleys and hillsides covered in vineyards change colours with the seasons and in many places you will still find reminders of the original immigrants. We recommend a drive along the Caminhos de Pedras, a route that has many old stone farm houses from the late 19th Century.

Pousada  Borghetto-Santana is a small boutique pousada (3 houses and 4 suites) in the style of Tuscany´s country houses. Nicely-decorated and intimate it has beautiful views of the surrounding vineyards. Breakfast is served on the suites in little baskets at the time the client wishes. There are options nearby for lunch and dinner. As an option for a light dinner, for those do not want to go  out at night, the guesthouse can provide a basket of local produces (cheese, salami, bread, fruits and, of course, wine) to leave in the room. This has to be pre-arranged locally.

Day 2 - Day free for visits to the wineries and walks along the valley.

Day 3 - Return your car to Porto Alegre airport in the afternoon.

Price per person in double room in US$: $1074 with 1 person, $552 with 2 people, $455 with 3, $408 with 4. Single supplement = $260

Additional information:

Most European and North American driving licenses are accepted in Brazil. For other nationalities is best to have an international license.

If needed, because of late arrival, a first night in Porto Alegre can be added. We recommend the Intercity Express, a modern and functional hotel, located a mere 5 min from the airport. The rental would be picked up in the morning then at the airport.

Additional nights can be added. Please consult.
