This
tour features classic Riverboat travel up the Negro River to the Anavilhanas
National Park (a biological reserve & one of the largest groups of
freshwater islands in the world) and Rio Negro State Park. This is the
starting-off point for a 6 day/5 night canoeing and camping adventure
amidst the rivers and rainforest of this pristine part of Amazonia. In
addition to daily canoeing between locations the tour offers rainforest
walks, beach camping, fishing, and visits with the local river people
(Caboclos).
DAY 01 Arrival and Transfer IN to Hotel.
Overnight at the Hotel Brazil
DAY 02 After breakfast travelers will depart
Manaus aboard our support vehicle, a classic Amazon Riverboats, for a
short tour to see the "meeting of the waters"- where the Rio
Negro meets the Amazon, but the two do not mix due to differences in velocity,
density and temperature. At the meeting of the waters we often see gray
and pink river dolphins. On this short tour we will also visit Lake Janauari
on the Amazon River. We will talk a short walk along a raised walkway
into the center of the forest to a small lagoon where the giant Queen
Victoria water lilies grow. Often in the area we see monkeys, hawks, alligators,
morpho butterflies, iguanas and tree-sloths etc.
During lunch our Riverboat*, fully outfitted with food, drink and canoeing/camping
equipment for the group's adventure, will head up the Negro River. We
travel about 3 hours to Anavilhanas National Park near the village of
Arara and beside Tania's family home before the first islands of the Anavilhanas
Archipelago.
Overnight in local Caboclo home or aboard boat.
DAY
03-06 Early on the second morning, after breakfast, we will begin a canoeing
& camping trip to explore a number of unique environments. Depending
on river conditions tours will include some- but not all- of the following
areas: the lakes, channels, and flooded forest (Igapo) of the Anavilhanas
Archipelago (2nd largest group of fluvial/ river islands in the world),
the terra firma rainforest of Rio Negro State Park (some of the richest
rainforest in Amazonia), smaller tributaries such as the Arara, Jaraqui
and Tucuman Rivers, larger tributaries such as the Ariau and the Cuieiras
Rivers, and lakes of the right bank of the Negro River such as Lake Acajatuba
and Lake Limão. Depending on conditions the farthest destination
reached would be the town of Novo Airao on the right bank of the Negro
River 2/3s of the way through the archipelago during the dry season when
travel further up the Cuieiras River is not possible. Features of this
tour include: beach and jungle camping, hiking, fishing, swimming, wildlife,
and visits with the local river people (Caboclos). During the tour our
Riverboats will serve as support vehicle and base for the group's exploring
(sleeping, communications, safety, and meals).
