Ecuador
In search of the Humpback whale (Machalilla National
Park)
Level: Moderate
Machalilla
National Park is the best-preserved coastal reserve in continental Ecuador.
It is the site of magnificent beaches, tropical dry forests and pre-Inca
ruins from the Valdivia, Chorrera, and Manteño cultures. The park
also includes Isla de la Plata, an island famous for having wildlife similar
to that of the Galapagos Islands. Each day brings new adventures as we
kayak various sections of the park where Humpback whales gather to bear
their offspring.
DAY 1: QUITO TO MACHALILLA
Transfer by land or air to Manta and Machalilla National Park. The park
was established to conserve a unique dry-forest ecosystem. We visit local
museums and practice our paddle technique to get familiarized with our
kayaks. We will spend the evening at a seaside lodge. (L, D)
DAY 2: SEA KAYAK SALANGO
Todays destination is Salango, a small islet located approximately
3 km offshore. We will keep an eye out for whales as we paddle. Salango
is famous for its ancient burial grounds belonging to the Valdivia, Machalilla
and Chorrera people. As we paddle and snorkel around the islet, we will
be able to explore some beautiful pristine beaches. (B, L, D)
DAY 3: MOTOR BOAT TO THE ISLA DE LA PLATA
On our third day we ride a motor boat to Isla de la Plata, which is known
for its Galapagos-like marine life. During a short hike along the islands
trails we will encounter Blue Footed Boobies, Red Footed Boobies, Albatross
and Sea lions. The evening will be spent relaxing at our seaside lodge.
(B, L, D)
DAY 4: SEA KAYAK MACHALILLA
Morning paddle on our last day to a beautiful beach called La Playita,
observing ocean and land birds. Midday transfer to Manta. Transfer by
land or air to Quito. (B)
