Atlantic Forest & Marau - 5 Days

To the south of Salvador, located beyond Itaparica island on the other side of All Saints’ Bay, is the coastal region known as the Dendê Coast (Costa do Dende), named after the African oil-palm tree that is prevalent there. From its fruit is extracted an oil, much used in local cooking, as well as for manufacturing steel. Besides oil-palm cultivation, the region also grows black pepper, cloves and piaçava (palm). In our cultural learning, we’re going to visit the island of Cairu, the 3rd major island of Una River archipelago, with the islands of Tinharé and Boipeba. The little town of Cairu does not possess good bathing beaches but is an important historic town where the past is still deeply felt particularly during religious ceremonies. The coconut and piaçava provide basic elements to the artesian. Fishing and boat construction support the local economy.
The Maraú Peninsula has beautiful untouched beaches, tropical forest, rivers, waterfalls and preserved nature. There’s a handful of small fishing villages mostly not on any maps. Barra Grande is the main village of the Peninsula and the starting point to discover this paradise. Next to the Peninsula, is the Camamu bay, with its many islands, being the third major bay in Brazil. The town, with the same name, offers a great view of the Marau’s estuary. It was an important city in the 18th century, and the Portuguese influence is seen in the local architecture
.
