Trekking Los Nevados National Park and
Reserva Natural de Flora y Fauna Otún Quimbaya


This trek takes place mostly within Los Nevados National Park, located in the heart of the central mountain range. The park’s 58.300 hectares stand out for their perennial snows, as in Santa Isabel and Nevado del Ruiz, its moonlike valleys, “páramos”, lakes and volcanoes, as well as an important biological variety which includes the spectacled bear and the condor of the Andes. The itinerary leads to the “cafetales” of Chinchina and finally to the Reserva Natural de Flora y Fauna Otún Quimbaya, located a few kilometers from Pereira, which, due to its location in an area of sub Andean jungle, offers great biodiversity.

Day 1 | Bogotá
Arrival at El Dorado airport in Bogotá with an intercontinental flight. Reception and transfer to the hotel. Overnight stay. Meals: - / - / -

Day 2 | Bogotá City Tour
After breakfast, HALF DAY CITY TOUR OF BOGOTA , with visits to the historic center of la candelaria, and must see places like the Gold Museum (Museo del Oro) and the Botero museum. On the afternoon, departure to the north towards Zipaquirá, traveling for an hour an 15 minutes across the central region of the savanna, home to Colombia’s famous flower cultures as you can see from the greenhouses along the road. Arrival and visit to the impressive Salt Cathedral, a magnificent work of engineering. Return to Bogotá and overnight stay. Meals: B / - / -

Day 3 | Bogotá - Manizales
Transfer to the airport after breakfast for a commercial flight to Manizales. Arrival, transfer and hotel check-in. Afternoon for a visit of town to see Plaza Bolívar with an interesting statue by the sculptor Rodrigo Arenas Betancourt, the cathedral, the Republican style Palacio de la Gobernación, a building dating to 1928, the cable car station, current seat of the Faculty of Architecture and the wooden cable-car Torre del Herveo. Continuation to the Recinto del Pensamiento and visit to the butterfly garden, the orchid forest, which showcases over 130 species, and the medicinal plant garden. Return to the hotel and overnight stay. Meals: B / - / -

Day 4 | Manizales - T ermales del Ruiz
Transfer after breakfast to Vereda Maria and start of the six hour walk through a mountain path in the humid forest a great variety of plants, waterfalls, birds, typical villages and gold mining communities in the central Andean mountain range. Afternoon transfer to the Refugio Termales del Ruiz at 3.500 m above sea level. Overnight stay. Meals: B / L / D

Day 5 | Termales del R uiz - Los Nevados National Park -Volcán La Olleta
Car transfer after breakfast to the base of La Olleta volcano (4.700 m) and two hour ascent to the top to then continue on to Valle del Cisne. After lunch, three hour walk to the Laguna Verde lookout (4.600 m). Dinner and overnight stay in tents in Valle del Cisne. Meals: B / L / D

Day 6 | Nevado Santa Isabel - Valle del Cisne
Ascent and approach to the Nevado Santa Isabel glacier, a beautiful path rich in “páramo” ecosystem flora and fauna, among which many medicinal plants. Ascent to the glaciers (5.000 m) on a route surrounded by lagoons formed by the thaw and return to the Valle del Cisne shelter. Dinner and overnight stay in tents. Approximate duration: seven hours. Day 7 | Nevado del Ruiz - Valle del Cisne
Given the degree of difficulty of this ascent, good health is required. Start of the ascent from the southern side to an altitude of 5.321 m in the glaciers around the Arenas volcano which allows for sightings of incredible landscapes. Return to camp in Valle del Cisne. Day 8 | Valle del Cisne - Ecotermales La Quinta
Five hour descent through mountains, forests and paths that lead to Finca Las Nereidas and Termales La Quinta (3.800 m), a cattle ranch with beautiful mountainscapes, waterfalls and thermal waters. Free remainder of the day to relax. Overnight stay. Meals: B / L / D

Day 9 | Ecotermales La Quinta - Chinchiná
Return by “chiva” or local bus through Villamaría, Manizales and Vereda Alto Tablazo, to start a beautiful five hour road trip that little by little leads to the densest coffee producing area, near Manizales and Chinchiná to reach Hacienda Venecia, a coffee producing and exporting plantation. Free remainder of the day to relax. Overnight stay. Meals: B / L / D

Day 10 | Coffee Processing and Walk in the Cafetales
All day to visit the cultural landscape of the coffee growing culture with its hills covered in coffee shrubs that are being considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit to the plantations and viewing of the coffee bean drying and selection process in a “trilladora”, which ends in a tasting to define flavor. Continuation on a walk along a coffee planted hill until Hacienda Venecia. Overnight stay. Meals: B / L / D

Day 11 | Chinchiná - Pereira - Refugio La Pastora
Car transfer after breakfast to El Cedral station near Pereira and start of the walk to the basin of the Otún river and La Pastora eco-lodge. Arrival, dinner and overnight stay. Meals: B / L / D
Day 12 | Refugio La Pastora - Reserva Natural de Flora y Fauna Otún Quimbaya
Car trip to Reserva Natural de Flora y Fauna Otún Quimbaya and walk to observe local plants and animals. This ecological reserve created in 1996 to protect the biodiversity of the pre Andean rain forest with lakes, waterfalls and rivers is the perfect habitat for numerous bird species, tapirs of the “páramos”, howler monkeys, spectacled bears, insects and about 200 butterfly species. Arrival by car to La Suiza and start of the walk to see the jungle and observe the flora and fauna. Overnight stay in Reserva Natural de Flora y Fauna Otún Quimbaya. Meals: B / L / D

Day 13 | Reserva Natural de Flora y Fauna Otún Quimbaya - Pereira - Bogotá
Transfer to Pereira Airport after breakfast for flight to Bogotá. Arrival and transfer to the hotel. Free remainder of the day for individual activities.
