Curu Sea Kayaking
With
635 miles of shoreline along the Pacific coast and 132 miles on
the Caribbean, and both oceans fed by literally hundreds of rivers,
Costa Rica offers unequaled opportunity to enjoy the rapidly growing
sport of sea kayaking. Sea kayaking is a natural way to experience
the beauty of Costa Rica. The sea kayak is a self propelled small
craft devised by the ancient Eskimo tribes in the Arctic ocean and
has evolved into a stable, efficient and extremely sea worthy craft
which makes wildlife observation excellent and totally unobtrusive.
No experience is necessary to control the kayak for the first time.
The rudder and paddle are your tools for mastering the operation
of this craft.
Day 1 - We depart San Jose early in the morning for the Pacific
Coast city of Puntarenas, where we go by ferry across the Gulf
of Nicoya to Playa Paquera. From there, we drive 30 minutes
to the Silvestre Curú National Wildlife Refuge. Upon
arrival, you will get a short briefing on sea kayaking safety. We
will paddle about an hour along the coast to our camp on Playa Quesera,
a beautiful, deserted, white sand beach backed by thick forest.
Playa Quesera will be our base camp for the duration of the trip.
After a delicious dinner, you can sleep in our comfortable tents
or under the stars in a hammock. (B,L,D)
Days 2-3 - We will spend these
two days enjoying the variety of the area - paddling to Las Islas
Tortugas and a natural rock arch formed by the sea, surf kayaking,
and drifting through a mangrove estuary inhabited by numerous
species of birds and colorful crabs. This balmy tropical paradise
is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the clear emerald green
sea and native wildlife. Evenings are for stargazing, crab hunting
and simply enjoying conversation and the tranquility of the forest
and sea. Overnight at Playa Quesera. (B,L,D)
Day 4 - We will go for our last
paddle in the morning back to the main beach where we began. Then
after lunch, we will meet the ferry back to Puntarenas and drive
to San Jose. (B,L)
