Legends say the Chachapoyans were tall fair
skin warriors, and they built their fortified cities on top mountains
all over the mysterious Dept. of Amazonas. This trip (segment) offers
Americas largest & most mysterious fortress, with soaring stonewalls
inside of walls, built to stop the advance of an empire. You will also
see the 2nd largest fortress and the Inca Military Garrison guarding the
empires major crossroads. Walk downhill on perhaps the Incas
best un-restored highway. This trip offers the worlds driest desert
and thousands of mini-ecological zones with natives, plants and animals
adapted to each extreme. No other zone offers Americas greatest
varieties and most advanced ancient Indian culture. --- Optional extra
day, leave by Tarapoto with trekking and boating in the Amazon rainforest.
Day 1 Chachapoyas Huancas-Levanto
Bus station pick up service in Chachapoyas and transfer to hotel to rest.
We will pick you up at 8:30 a.m. and start with the visit to Huancas and
Sonche Canon, Huancas was an Inca Mitima village, (the residents were
transplants from Huanuco in the Inca heartland to pacify the rebellious
Cloud People.) Huancas main business is making pottery since ancient times,
providing for the entire zone. After lunch we will visit Levanto (one
hour from Chachapoyas). Levanto was the most significant city of the zone
at the time of the Inca invasion and also in the Spanish colonial era.
We will see a colonial church as old as Lima with its high-carved altar.
We will go to the fortified ruins of Yalape overlooking the city. Nearby
is Colla Cruz, this was a major crossroads of the empire's roads with
over 2000 miles of major roads going north to Ecuador & Colombia,
south to Huanuco and Cuzco, and west to Cajamarca (where the Inca was
captured), and east to the Amazon. We will see the Inca Military Garrison
guarding this intersection. This is the
zone's first restoration, which revealed a major defeat of the Incas by
the Cloud people in the revolution against the Spanish. Night in Levanto
MS Lodge high in the mountains. (L, D)
Day 2 Inca Trail Levanto Choctamal
Inca Trail to Chachapoyas (3 hours downhill), lunch in Chachapoyas and
night in Choctamal Marvelous Spatuletail Lodge located in the road to
Kuelap, where you can observe hummingbirds, specially the Marvelous Spatuletail
hummingbird and variety of orchids. (B, L, D)
Day 3 Fortress Kuelap
After breakfast we will travel by car for 35 minutes from Choctamal MS
Lodge to Kuelap. The fortress of Kuelap was re-discovery in 1843 by Juan
Crisostomo Nieto, and is precariously perched on a mountain ridge (about
3000m) overlooking the Utcubamba Valley. Kuelap has over four hundred
buildings inside 3 levels of walls, it is roughly 20m hight, 600 meters
in length and 110 meters in width and is known as the largest stone structure
in the Americas. Orchids and bromeliads cover the walls and trees inside
this fortress. Inside there are remains of many small round houses, some
of them with a zigzag or diamond pattern in their terraces. Archaeological
evidence shows that the structure was started before 800 AD. Transfer
to Chachapoyas bus station for your night bus to Chiclayo. (B, L)

Northern Peru offers the world's most extreme geography: its greatest rainforest, driest desert, and 2nd highest mountains. These offer thousands of mini-ecological zones with natives, plants and animals adapted to each zone. Tarapoto and Moyobamba transitions from the Basin to mountain jungles & huge waterfalls. Kuelap is the "Machu Picchu of Northern Peru" with Peru's most mysterious and largest variety of ruins in the Andes. We have many of the world's most exotic and almost extinct hummingbirds.
Day 1 Tarapoto-Cocachimba
Public bus transfer from Tarapoto to Pedro Ruiz bus station (approx. 6
hours), private transfer to the town of Cocachimba at 1,736 mts. over
sea level approximately. Transfer to Cocachimba town. We will spend the
night in Gocta Lodge with relaxing views of Gocta waterfall.
Day 2 Cocachimba Gocta - Chachapoyas
Three hours hike or horseback (one way) to Gocta waterfall. The measured
height of 771 meters. As a result of an expedition lead by Stefan Ziemendorff
and Telesforo Santillan (local guide) in March 2006, Gocta waterfall made
the international news testifying the remoteness and unfolding discoveries
of Americas newly accessible and most pristine ecological and archeological
destination. During the hike you will be able to observe variety of hummingbirds,
birds, flowers, maybe toucans, monkeys and other species from the region.
Overnight in Chachapoyas. (B, L)
Day 3 Chachapoyas Karajia - Choctamal
Transfer to Cruz Pata (2.5 hours approx). We will go to the 8-foot high
funeral sarcophagus of Karajia (also known by the local as Purunmachus,
quechua word that means: purun= wild and machu=old) located on a mountain
cliff at about 2,600m (20 minutes downhill hike) and continue with the
route of the condors where you can observe from the road more than 20
newly discovered sarcophagi. Afternoon transfer to Choctamal Marvelous
Spatuletail Lodge where you can observe hummingbirds, the lodge is located
on the road to Kuelap at only 35 minutes from the fortress, excellent
panoramic views of Kuelap and the Abra Yumal Pass. (B, L, D)
Day 4 ChoctamalKuelap-Choctamal

Day 5 Choctamal Revash Leymebamba
We will continue traveling south from Tingo intersection to Leymebamba
(two hours from Choctamal), on the way to Leymebamba we will visit Revash
Mausoleums (two hours hike). Revash Mausoleums are small rectangular miniature
houses located under the shelter of the rock. (also called Chullpas).
After visint Revash we continue with our trip to the museum of Leymebamba
that houses the 219 mummies that were discovered in 1997 by a group of
local farmers. These mummies were located 10 hours horseback on a cliff
under a waterfall by the Lake of the Condors. Research is being conducted
in this museum under the supervision of Dra. Sonia Guillen. After visiting
the KentiKafe and observe a variety of hummingbirds. Night in Casa Mallqui.

Pizarro's tiny band of conquistadores and
horses marched to Cajamarca, the city of destiny. Here they captured the
world's largest empire, and in the Inca's cell, they filled it 3 times
with gold and silver. We cross the main trunk Amazon where it leaves the
world's 2nd highest mountains to enter the domain of the Chachapoyan Cloud
People. This newly accessible zone was the Andes most fortified and mysterious
with the highest density of ruins. On a high mountain, Fortress Kuelap
is the largest building of the Americas. We end our tour in Chiclayo where
America's most advanced civilization lived on the world's driest desert
with 26 pyramids. The Lord of Sipan was recently discovered in a pyramid
that was America's richest gold-filled tomb.
Day 1 Cajamarca Leymebamba
Public bus to Leymebamba. Our bus climbs the sweeping cold cordillera
and descends into an oven dry valley to cross the main trunk Marañon
River. Here a coastal Chimu Colony uses their irrigation skills to grow
exotic tropical fruits in a micro ecological system. Transfer to Casa
Mallqui in Leymebamba to spend the night. ( D)
Day 2 Leymebamba - Centro Mallqui Museum
- Revash -Choctamal
Now we get to see Peru's brand new Centro Mallqui Museum that the Austrians
donated for this unique 1998 discovery at Lake of the Condors (you have
seen on the Discovery Channel). The 219 mummies are here along with many
artifacts. On the way to Choctamal we will see the Revash Ruins. Night
in Choctamal Marvelous Spatuletail Lodge, gateway to Kuelap and Gran Vilaya).

Day 3 Choctamal- Kuelap Chachapoyas
We will spend the day at Fortress Kuelap known as "the Machu Picchu
of the North". Kuelap has over 400 buildings inside 3 levels of walls,
and is the largest stone structure of the Americas. Orchids and bromeliads
cover the walls and trees inside this fortress. On the way to Chachapoyas
we will observe the platforms of Macro located on a cliff overlooking
the Utcubamba River. Overnight in Chachapoyas, 3 star hostel. (B, L)
Day 4 Chachapoyas Karajia, Pinchourco
Transfer to Cruz Pata (2.5 hours approx). We will go to the 8-feet high

Day 4 Choctamal-Revash-Leymebamba
On the way to Leymebamba we will see the Revash Ruins. The mausoleums
resemble small housing and conglomerates of the same ones, forming miniature
"villages". For this circumstance and for their emplacement
in stacks, Revash's funeral houses show a curious similarity with the
cliff-houses of Colorado. Night in Leymebamba, Casa Mallqui. (B, BL, D)
Day 5 Leymebamba - Tajopampa La Petaca
Diablo Huasi - Chachapoyas
Private transportation to Tajopampa (1 hour) where our horses will be
waiting for us for a two hour exploration to the Petaca Tombs, (some of
them still contain mummified human remains) and he famous Diablo Huasi
(devil house) located on a steep cliff with its variety of mausoleums
with skeletons, mummies and burial cloth hanging from the tombs. Horseback

Day 6 Chachapoyas Gocta Cocachimba
