Jaguar Seeking

The most fascinating animal of the rich Pantanal fauna is the largest cat on the continent: the Jaguar. We offer several options for jaguar safaris. While tracking the jaguars, you can see other interesting wildlife such as monkeys, Giant river Otters, and numerous bird species. .
From Cuiabá to Puma or Jaguar reserve (they are 2km from each other) we need minimum of 5 hours if we don't stop. From there to Porto Jofre, another 1.5 hours. On the tour, from Porto Jofre to Cuiabá we need 6.5- 7 hours, but this is for the return, when we don't stop for everything we see along the road. Rarely we can have this same time when going to the remote areas as everything is new and we make a lot of stops for photographs. That's why we suggest a break along the way at any other lodge (like Piuval or Arancuã). On just a 3 day Jaguar trip, with no overnights elsewhere, you would only have 1 day for a boat trip, which would lessen your chances of seeing jaguars.

Puma Lodge

Puma Lodge is A modest, colourful lodge in a spectacular setting 106 km down the Transpantaneira Park Road. It ffeatures 10 air-conditioned rooms, is solar powered and has a spacious, indoor restaurant, refreshing swimming pool and a relaxing sun-bathing area.

Walking or riding bikes or horses on the forest trails offer great opportunities for observing animals and birdlife and the night tour is a highlight at Puma Lodge. Puma Lodge uses its own motorboats on the Cuiaba river, roughly 40 kms from the Lodge.

Day 1 - Pick-up at any place in Cuiabá and transfer to the traditional town of Poconé with introduction to the geological formation and flora characteristics, then to the lodge, arriving there after a terrestrial safari along the Transpantaneira park-road with many stops to watch its rich fauna. Arrival at a good time to enjoy a brief activity. Dinner and night safari - a night-time drive using a vehicle equipped with a flashlight for highlighting nocturnal fauna, with chance to observe crab-eating foxes, ocelots and many caiman's eyes!

Days 2-3 - Whole days dedicated to search for the Jaguar, on aquatic and terrestrial expeditions.

Day 4 - Departure to Cuiabá for embarking at the airport at the convenient time.

Piquiri Lodge

The Pousada Rio Piquiri, near the river of the same name which makes up the border between the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, is far crom civilization and in a very peaceful setting. Many animals live near here and it is a good place to see jaguars on boat excursions, particularly from June-November. The banks of the Rio Piquiri are one of the richest natural reserves in the world and a great number of animals can be seen in the nearby gallery forest and Acuri palm groves.

The pousada has 4 large simple and clean rooms for 2 to 5 persons each. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, screens on the windows and private bathrooms. The air-conditioned restaurant serves excellent food and there is a TV and a telephone. Because it is so remote, a generator is used for electricity.

To get to the pousada, you have to drive about 275 km from Cuiaba to Porto Jofre, at the end of the Transpananeira highway, and then take a boat ride of about 45 minutes. It is the most isolated of the lodges

Other options:

Jaguar Reserve, like Puma is a roadside lodge, with rooms less than 20 meters far from the road. The Jaguar Ecological Reserve is not a luxury hotel – guests seeking swimming pools and television may prefer to stay at hotels closer to Cuiabá or Poconé. We are proud to offer a comfortable lodge in a remote yet accessible setting. We are surrounded by some of the Pantanal’s finest wildlife habitat. By staying with us you directly contribute to a successful ecotourism program in the heart of the Pantanal. We have expanded and improved the lodge significantly in the past four years. We are happy to report that we now offer 9 guest rooms, with a total of 18 single beds. Eight guest rooms have air conditioning. Each room is fully furnished and has a private bath, mosquito nets, fan, and porch with hammocks. We use a generator and solar panels for electricity. Hot water is available daily. Guests enjoy family-style dining. Breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as afternoon tea are included. We specialize in local dishes prepared from local ingredients. Fresh fruits and vegetables from our gardens, fish caught in nearby rivers and streams, and beef and poultry from our ranch provide the basis for delicious meals. We also offer a selection of ice-cold Brazilian beer, soft-drinks and bottled water. Imported wines from Chile and Argentina and assorted cocktails are available.
The cost is between Puma and Piquiri.

Porto Jofre Hotel is a big resort, with 28 rooms, right at the end of the Transpantaneira, and has internet room and wireless, a/c restaurant, big swimming pool and very nice boats. Being guested at Jaguar Reserve or at Puma demands you to go, everyday, to Porto Jofre, in a journey of 36km, to take the boat. Being guested at Porto Jofre Hotel, you just need to leave the room and take the boat. So, Porto Jofre Hotel is more comfortable, while Jaguar Reserve and Puma offers the terrestrial safari as well. Cost is a little less than Piquiri

SouthWild Jaguar - Operates from the Transpantanal Floating Hotel.
For 2012 our Jaguar Camp is operating from the Floating Balsa Hotel located near the mouth of the Tres Irmaos River. It features 10 small double rooms with A/C, private bathroom with excellent hot water showers, excellent local cuisine and drinks. The Balsa runs on a generator.
Morning and afternoon excursions in our radio equipped motor boat feature several families of incredibly tame Giant Otters, Kingfischers, Howler Monkeys and Jaguars. Jaguar sightings can vary from brief encounters to several hours of observations. Operates May through November. Cost is similar to Porto Jofre Hotel

Cheapest Option is camping at Porto Jofre Camp. Our tented accommodation at Porto Jofre is set up at the very end of the Transpantaneira Road. All visitors who spent least 3 nights or more at the Camp saw a jaguar in 2011. Of course, we cannot offer a cast iron guarantee that you will see jaguars every day, but we can promise that you will see other equally breathtaking wildlife during your stay. Smaller cats such as the ocelot, as well as tapirs, giant anteaters, peccaries, foxes, howler monkeys and caiman are all a regular feature of the area, as well of course as the hundreds of species of birds.
