The
Juma Lodge, far to the south of Manaus, was designed to be total integrated
to the jungle. The construction and operation of the lodge comply with
a respect of the limitations of the environment, which is the very reason
for the hotel to exist. All materials used in the construction are plentiful
in the area. The Lodge was built on sold ground and is supported on stilts.
This type of construction is necessary due to the flood season, when the
river water level rises up to 20meters (66 feet).
There are eight standard huts facing the
jungle and eight special huts facing the lake and sitting among the treetops
at 15 meters above the water, located in an exclusive area of the lodge,
offering total privacy. All apartments are comfortable, with private bathroom,
fan and balcony. The lodge was designed to be fully integrated to the
surrounding forest, where the guests are able to feel the real enchantment
and mystery of the Amazon.
The restaurant is also built on stilts. The tables (and benches) are long and curved, creatively carved out of a light, blond wood. The meals are in a buffet-style, with regional and international cuisine.
Juma Lodge has a strong and active sense of responsibility for the conservation of the Amazon Rainforest! Our main conservation project involves providing financial support to restore the forest along the rivers bordering the lake where the lodge is located (Juma Lake). To undertake this project we have partnered with a local non-profit organization, Eco Amazonas, wich is affiliated with the Federal University of the Amazon (Universidade Federal do Amazonas). The project involves an agreement between Juma Lodge and the local residents who live along the rivers. Under this agreement, the residents receive training on how to cultivate seedlings of native trees and Juma Lodge agrees to purchase all the seedlings they produce. This allows the residents to increase their income and the Amazon Rainforest to be regenerated. Currently 40 families participate in the project and 3.500 hectares of forest have been restored.
And there is more action! We are currently concluding
a census of all Mura Indians in the area (social-economic registration),
and we are ensuring the preservation of their culture throught an agreement
to purchase Mura handicrafts and involve the indians in the forest restoration
project. We have also been working on recovering the Mura language which
is now spoken only by elders and is at risk of extinction.
We had a great time - the lodge was wonderful. We had a fantastic guide and enjoyed all of our excursions. Thank you for your help in arranging everything. - Lyle
