Lagamar

Lagamar is in the largest continous extension of remaining Brazilian Atlantic Forest. It is a 200km (124mi.) long coastal strip from the Brazilian state of São Paulo to Paraná. The Atlantic Rainforest Biosphere Reserve is a World Heritage Site and attracts many tourists. The area is described as one of the most important protecting regions in the planet.

In 1999 Lagamar was awarded the title of The World´s Best Ecotourism Destination, by Condé Nast Traveler. Lagamar is a sparkling myriad of lagoons fomed by numerous adjoining rivers which meet with the sea, where serenity and thrills are the dominatnt ways of life. The area in which four islands takes an important role is limited in the south by the beautiful sea bay of Baia de Paranaguá and in the north by a river delta system which is Ilha das Peças, Ilha do Superagui, Ilha do Cardoso and Ilha Comprida. Between these islands, many small ones are found. Protected within Lagamar are numerous pockets of rainforest, mangroves and coastal lowlands. A gigantic tangle of bromelias, orchids, ferns and palms of the rarest types are gathered with completely unesplored plant species. The area also serves as a breeding ground for marine species. The rich jewel-tones of the environment hypnotizes everyone with their vibrant glow as the dolphins perform gracefully.

From the animal kingdom among other capuchin monkeys, wild and water pigs, deers, are smaller mammals and different species of crayfish to watch. The infinite bird world grasps innumerable, partial species of parrot, parakeet families, herons and many others that uses the paradisiacal lagoon area as a stopover.

Spend the days frolicking in waterfalls, island-hopping, snorkeling and diving, hiking through the lush Atlantic Rainforests and in the Superagui National Park, marveling at the rare species on the uninhabited island, and know about the local culture of the quaint fishing villages. The 37km (23mi.) long, deserted beach extends on th island of Superagui. It is suitable particularly for extensive walks and for the observation of the numerous migratory birds. Some Indian villages are in this reservation living in harmony with nature.

Cananéia is a historic port town located 270km (168mi.) south of São Paulo and is the major entry point to the Ilha do Cardoso Island State Park and the Lagamar complex. Ilha Comprida has 74km (46mi.) of sandy beach and intricate mangrove trails. Guaraqueçaba is a small town with some remarkable buildings from the historical past and is surrounded by a gigantic nature paradise. The 2340 hectares of nature reservation of Reserva Natural do Salto Morato is equipped with a versatile biological balance which makes it possible to house a large number of animals and plants. The name of the area is a reference to its main attraction, Dom Morato Waterfall with 30m (98ft.)of height. Lagamar is a great place to enjoy nature.
