The Chilean Lake District Tours

Main Attractions:

Puerto Montt: A southern city full of charm, old streets and houses with European features brought by German colonists, avenues that reach the sea, markets that worship fishes and shellfish, impressive lakeside path which will give you the best landscapes of the city, the one that surrounds all the bay. On this trip, sculptures such as Mirador or Sentados Frente al Mar can be seen and it is possible to visit a pleasant Railroad museum, great stores and recreation areas..

Petrohué Waterfalls: Petrohué river is located in the province of Llanquihue and on its course it has an area of impressive waterfalls called Petrohué Waterfalls. The river rises in Todos los Santos Lake and flows into the sea in the Reloncaví Estuary. It is possible to make different sports activities such as fishing, rafting and kayak.

Osorno Volcano: It is the perfect icon of Los Lagos Region. Green hillsides with eternal snow on its top. Its great height makes it possible to sight it from the entire province of Osorno, even from some places of the Chiloé Island, which therefore constitutes an impressive postcard and typical of the region’s landscape.
Location: Tenth Region. Located at 60 kilometers from Puerto Varas in an easterly direction and 80 kilometers from Puerto Montt in an northeasterly direction.

Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park: The first one and the most visitted Chilean national park. We will discover inside this protected natural reserve, the always green Valdiviano Forest, Todos los Santos Lake (Esmeralda Lake) and Petrohué Waterfalls; through a short walk we will reach to this impressive scenario.

The Llanquihue Lake: It is the third biggest natural lake of South America, with a surface of 887 Kms2. Volcanoes Osorno, Puntiagudo, Calbuco and Tronador are reflected on its waters, offering a stage beauty of the cities situated on its shores. Its name means “submerged place”, and it also stands out for its good fishing.

Frutillar: This picturesque city of extraordinary landscapes presents an outstanding construction reminiscent of the German style, and wide gardens. There are hotels, accommodation, restaurants and tourist services. It is characterized by its intense cultural activity, with a typical museum, and the well-known musical weeks between January and February.

PuyehueNational Park: Puyehue National Park is characterized by its dense forests, by a relief caused by volcanic activity, and by the abundance of water basins. The damp forest is caused by the amount of rains, and it is made up of coigües and ulmo in the lowest areas of the park, and tepa, mañío and coigüe in the highest areas. Also, it presents thermal waters, and in winter it is possible to enjoy skiing in the Antillanca center, on the side of Casa Blanca volcano.

4 Day Lake District Adventure

Note: The excursions order might vary based on logistics considerations.

Day 1, The Adventure Starts!…Puerto Varas, Lake District, Chile
We arrive in Puerto Montt in the morning and meet our guide at the airport. Before heading to Puerto Varas we do a short ride around Puerto Montt to learn about this southern city’s traditional places like its typical handcraft market “Angelmó” and the fish market, where the local “cocinerias” (large shed-like areas divided into mini-restaurants where they prepare seafood) offer a wide range of delicious fish and shellfish preparations. Later on we start driving to Puerto Varas, a beautiful town just 15 minutes away located in the borders of Lake Llanquihue. Just some kmts before enter town we will enjoy a splendid view of the Lake’s bay and the magnificent Osorno Volcano and will also notice Puerto Vara’s marked German architecture as consequence of a significant German immigration in early twentieth century. We pass by many of the town’s highlights including la “Iglesia Catedral” and the “Philippi Park”. We finally arrive at our hotel. We now have some free time to rest and look for a good restaurant in town to have a light lunch – yes, light, because later we are going rafting!

In the afternoon we board the van that will take us to Petrohue sector, in Perez Rosales NP. We drive towards the Park located on the flanks of the Osorno Volcano, where the turquoise waters of the Petrohue river flow. Once we arrive we will meet our skilled guides who will equip us will all the rafting gear needed (wetsuit, helmet, paddle jacket and life jacket) and then we learn about the technical and safety instructions for this exciting trip! Now we board the rafts and start paddling down this beautiful class III river; after we have completed the rafting adventure a snack wait for us. When we are ready we return to Puerto Varas. The night is free to walk around town and look for a great dinner.

Day 2, Exploring Perez Rosales NP Perez Rosales NP, Lake District, Chile
Today after breakfast we return to one of the most beautiful and oldest parks of Chile –Perez Rosales NP. Once we enter the Park we will head towards the mighty Osorno Volcano, a conic shaped volcano that escorts the surrounding lakes. We will drive up steep hills reaching the ski center. From this point there is an optional ascension taking the sky lifts to a higher point with an incredible view of Lake Llanquihue and its surroundings. After short walks around the volcano slopes we continue to the Petrohue Falls, a rocky sector where the turquoise waters of River Petrohue stretches creating cascades, exciting scenery! Now we are ready to continue driving and reach Lake Todos los Santos, whose evergreen trees and tranquil waters will surely make us stop internally and relax. We go back to Puerto Varas. The afternoon is at leisure. The night is free to rest and find a great restaurant for dinner.

Day 3, Exploring Alerce Andino National Park Alerce Andino NP, Lake District, Chile
Today we will visit an incredible reserve named after the millenary Alerce tree, which is undoubtedly one of the most interesting tree species of Chile. In this Park some alerces are older than 3,000 years old! That is why they call them the respected old of the south. We initiate our drive taking “Los Colonos” route heading to Puerto Montt city, passing by the small town with the same name “Alerce” and then connect with the Carretera Austral (Southern Highway). This famous road is surrounded by abundant fauna, flora, and the beautiful Andean Cordillera whose mountains are lower in these latitudes. Along the road there will be also typical small farming villages with a marked European look.

Once we arrive into this 39,255 hectares Park, located in the shores of Reloncavi, we start a beautiful hike in the different trails going through the Park. If we are lucky we will watch some of the interesting animals that live in these lands like the Chilean deer, pumas, pudús (the smallest deer in the world), condors, black carpenter birds and much more. We stop for lunch in one of the picnic facilities. We then return to hike among these ancient trees and lakes. Later on we return to Puerto Varas. This is our final night; we now have time to take notes, talk with our friends and why not? Look for a delicious Pisco Sour!
