Llanos

The Llanos or flatlands are formed by vast grasslands with ribbons of forest along the creeks and rivers. It is an environment of harsh extremes, drought alternating with flood. The Llanos are sparsely populated. Most of the inhabitants live from cattle raising. The Llanos are Venezuela's greatest repository of wildlife. You find more than 320 bird species (includes ibis, herons, cormorants, egrets, jacanas, gallinules and darters) and more than 50 mammals (includes the capybara, the worlds largest rodent, armadillos, peccaries, opossums, tapirs, ocelots). Also the Orinoco Cayman - threatened with extinction - lives here.

Hato El Cedral

El Cedral Ranch is one of the most beautiful places in the world to experience an outstanding display of wildlife and a unique landscape, for both of which it is world-renowned. It is a perfect destination for the ecotourist to experience a completely unique natural reserve.

Hundreds of species run freely, unaware of man's presence among them: anacondas (the biggest snake in the world), giant anteaters, white tailed deer, red howler monkeys, pink dolphins, pumas, jaguars, crocodiles, caimans, capybaras (the largest rodent in the world), and more than 340 registered species of birds (herons, egrets, storks, ibises, black-bellced ducks, hoatzins, scarlet macaws and orinoco geese, etc.). They are some of the reasons why El Cedral is considered an ecological reserve.

In this place hunting has been banned for many years. El Cedral is the only ranch in the oriniquia system where wildlife is so friendly and abundant. This is why it is classified as the best of the Venezuelan plains!

Excellent natural conditions of hydrological systems create a large water reserve that help sustain the abundant animal life and vegetation year round. 140 Km (87 milles) of roads inside the ranch make it possible to visit all sectors at any time of the year.

El Cedral ranch has become a landmark for international researchers in the natural sciences. The ranch is endorsed by institutions such as the National Geographic, Magazine of the National Geographic Society in USA, BBC from London, Discovery Channel, New York Zoological Society, London Zoo, Los Llanos University and Simon Bolivar University in Venezuela.

El Cedral comes with a friendly crew and bilingual tour guides. For us it is important that while you are here you feel at home and spend a marvelous, unforgettable stay as you enjoy breathtaking landscapes and great services. Among our main visitors you will find: bird watchers, adventure tourists, researchers, environmentalists, naturalists and observers of tropical species.

El Cedral is equipped with 25 comfortable air-conditioned cabins with ceiling fans and private bathrooms with hot water. Among the ammenities are a swimming pool and a pleasant dining room where native and international food is available. Telephone and fax facilities are also available. Night entertainment ranges from wildlife video projections, the opportunity to participate in scientific presentations or simply relax and enjoy the rhythm of a local "llanero" music group.

Day 1: (-/L/D) You will be met at the Barinhas airport, and you will drive through the Llanos. On the trip you will already see numerous birds, and you might be lucky to spot some smaller crocodiles in the water pools to the left and right of the road. As soon as you reach the entrance to the Hato Cedral, you change to an all-terrain vehicle that carries you directly to the Hato El Cedral, place of your accommodation. This last stretch consists of a muddy road and you will already meet lots of chigüires (capybaras). Once arrived, you can take a refreshing bath in the swimming pool or stroll around the area of the Hato, before you leave for your first excursion. You will take an open van which has been converted into a vehicle for safaris, and drive through the area of the Hato El Cedral. This will give you the opportunity to observe the abundance of wildlife present in South America. It includes Chigüires, Babas (a small caiman), caimans, iguanas, turtles, monkeys, anteaters, snakes (perhaps you will even see one of the enormous anacondas), and a large variety of birds comprising more than 300 species.

Day 2 (B/L/D) After breakfast you will take another tour in your van, but will see a different area of the Hato. You return to the ranch for lunch. In the afternoon you will take a boat trip on the Río Matiyure where you can see caimans, river dolphins and a variety of birds.

Day 3 (B/-/-) You will be picked up after breakfast and carried to the airport of Barinhas.

Hato Pinero

Hato Piñero, situated in the central llanos (plains) of Venezuela, is a paradise triangle spanning close to 140,000 acres bordered by three rivers and a range of mountains, where hundreds of species of wild animals run free. Hato Piñero represents the first successful undertaking in Venezuela which combines private conservation and biological research initiatives with an ecotourism enterprise. Thanks to its unique geographic location, Hato Piñero offers nature lovers the best of the venezuelan llanos and one of the most impressive and expansive nature sights in the world. In its varied topography you will discover diverse types of wetlands, grassy plains, mountains, deciduous and gallery forests where over 350 species of birds and a great variety of mammals and reptiles have been identified.

Once a private reserve, Hato Piñero now supports a foundation highly regarded by biologists the world over. Scientists from world renowned institutions come here time and time again to study the evolution of their chosen species.

With its expansive area and diverse habitats, Hato Piñero is one of the best bird watching locations in the world. Here, it is not uncommon to observe more than 100 species of birds in a single day. Just outside of your guest quarters it is easy to spot numerous types of egrets and herons; White, Scarlet, and Glossy Ibis; osprey; macaws; parrots; various hawks; black vultures; and hummingbirds among others. With the aid of a biologist guide, at every turn along the forest paths, you will run across a different species of animal- quite sociable and clearly unaware of the danger normally associated with man's presence.

Lazy giant tortoises leave their mark as they cut a path through the bamboo. The storks' flight bothers neither the herds of zebus grazing up in the lush green hills, nor the graceful white-tailed deers or peccaries down below on arid lands turned red by the afternoon sun. Playful monkeys hang in the branches of purple and gold-flowered trees and mock the caymans below, while the tapirs bask in the sun under the watchful eye of the parrots. The jaguars and pumas come out at night. There are more than a million animals living here in total safety.

Because hunting has been banned for over 50 years, wild animals exhibit a sense of security not readily seen in many nature parks. Visitors to the ranch can observe numerous species of birds and mammals at extraordinarily close distances as they travel through the area in the search for food. Some of the regularly seen mammals at Piñero include: foxes, ocelots, capuchin and red howler monkeys, capybaras, white-tailed deer, tapirs, anteaters, and peccaries.
