Orinoco Delta and Canaima

The Orinoco Delta is formed by the Orinoco River as it splits into 17 main distributaries. The Orinoco River is 2,140km long, the third longest river in South America. It begins in the Sierra Parima, in the Guyana Highlands, close to the border with Brazil. At its widest point, it measures 16km and has 194 tributaries; the three largest are the Caroni, Apure and Caura Rivers. At its mouth, the Orinoco River forms a wide Delta that branches off into more than 300 rivers and waterways that flow through swampy forests forming small islands and sandbanks. The tropical climate allows for lush vegetation and provides excellent living conditions for a varied wildlife. The majority of the Orinoco Delta region is sparsely populated. Nearly all of the natives belong to Warao Indian tribes who, for the most part, still live in traditional huts on stilts built along the banks of the rivers called Palafitos. There are also a few mission stations which can only be reached by water.

Day 1 Caracas – Delta (L/D)
flight from Caracas to Maturin (07:50 – 08:40 am). transfer from Maturin to Boca de Uracoa (about 2,5 hours) and from there by boat about 1 hour until you arrive to the Bujana Lodge which is located on a nice river side arm in the middle of the Delta. On the way you can already enjoy the fauna and flora of the Delta. In the afternoon you will make your first excursion to the surroundings. Dinner and overnight Bujana Lodge: http://www.cacaotravel.com/en/accommodations/orinoco-delta/unterkunft/bujana-lodge-1.html

Day 2 Orinoco Delta (B/L/D)
After breakfast we take a boat with which we work our way through the branches of the river, bordered by dense tropical rainforest. We can see monkeys, birds and other animals. We might see fresh water dolphins and observe monkeys and a variety of birds like toucans and parrots. On a small river branch we get off the boat. In rubber boots we step upon swampy ground and walk into the delta forest. There we get an insight of the typical vegetation, e.g. the Moriche palm-tree, the Indians "tree of life" and its multiple uses. We taste the heart of the Manaca palm-tree, which only grows in the delta and we visit one of the Warao Tribe families which live in their huts built at the sides of the rivers. These Indians also make beautiful handicrafts. Meals and overnight Bujana Lodge
