DAY 1: USHUAIA & BEAGLE CHANNEL – Embark M/V Polar Star in the charming town of Ushuaia to begin the journey of a lifetime.

DAY 2: AT SEA – During our days at sea we relax in the library or observation lounge, attend lectures or spot wildlife from the bridge or deck.

DAYS 3 – 4: FALKLAND ISLANDS – We plan a landing at Stanley to explore the museum containing displays on wildlife, shipwrecks and the 1982 Falklands War and perhaps visit an English style pub. It is spring in the southern oceans and here we get our first introduction to penguin life. Five species of penguins make their home here – Magellanic, Rockhopper, Marconi, Gentoo and King. These islands will also capture the interest of birdwatchers with the world’s largest colony of black-browed Mollymawks as well as albatross and petrel as we make other landings at sites such as New Island and West Point.

DAYS 5 – 6: AT SEA – During these days, the lecture program continues, led by our diverse team of expedition staff. You may also choose to take advantage of our open bridge policy by joining our Captain and officers on the bridge.

DAYS 7 - 10: SOUTH GEORGIA – Upon landing on the rugged and beautiful islands of South Georgia we will have the opportunity to walk amongst crowds of King penguins, as well as see Gentoo, Adelie, Marconi and Chinstrap penguins. A landing is planned in Grytviken to learn about Antarctic adventurer Ernest Shackleton, who is buried here. Other planned landings include Prion Island, Cooper Bay, Fortuna, Stromness and Salisbury Plain. Weather permitting we will follow in the footsteps of Shackleton with a hike from Fortuna Bay to Stromness.

DAYS 11 - 13: AT SEA & ELEPHANT ISLAND – An afternoon landing or Zodiac cruise is planned for Point Wild on Elephant Island, the site where 22 men from Shackleton’s 1914-17 expedition were stranded for 135 days, surviving by living under two upturned boats. While here, see the plaque and monolith commemorating their rescue and visit a Chinstrap penguin colony.

DAY 14: SOUTH SHETLAND ISLANDS – Alongside the whiteness of the great seventh continent, the landscape of volcanic Deception Island and Half Moon Island is surprising. At Whaler’s Bay, black sand and warm air is created by the island’s dormant volcano rising as steam. In addition to other wildlife sightings, this area is also ideal for birdwatching with possible sightings of Antarctic Tern, Kelp Gull, Skua, Antarctic Shag and Sheathbill.

DAYS 15 – 16: ANTARCTIC PENINSULA – Our exploration by ship into the springtime ice is augmented with Zodiac cruises that take us closer to towering white icebergs and areas of untouched nature and wildlife. Landings will expose us to busy penguin rookeries and seals will continue to amaze in this pristine wilderness. Possible visits may include Port Lockroy, Paradise Bay, Cierva Cove and Mikkelson Harbour.

DAYS 17 - 18: AT SEA – Our return journey is an excellent time to wrap up our lecture program, recap the overall experience and as always, lookout for whale, dolphin and seabirds.

DAY 19: USHUAIA – Back in the Beagle Channel this voyage concludes in Ushuaia where we disembark after breakfast.
