Rio Negro & Upper Rio Negro Amazon Cruises

Rio Negro (Riverboat +)

This longer riverboat based tour is based on our classic one week riverboat tour and offers an additional 4 days exploration on the Rio Negro river. This additional time allows us to explore lesser known destinations above the Anavilhanas Archipelago such as Jau National Park. The farthest point reached is the mouth of the Rio Branco river. This tour features excellent trekking and canoeing excursions in really pristine Amazon rainforest conditions.

DAY 01 - Arrive Manaus, where you will be met and taken on a guided/driven city tour. We will visit the famous Manaus Opera House, the Municipal Market, and the Museum of Natural Sciences or the Military Zoo. Lunch will be at a typical tropical fruitbar. Afternoon is free to walk around the city, visit other museums, go shopping or relax. Welcome dinner at the Fiorentiana Restaurant. Overnight at Hotel

DAY 02 - We depart from the floating port in our boat, a classic Amazon houseboat, fully outfitted with food, drink, and crew. From Manaus we travel half an hour to the stunning meeting of the waters, where the Rio Negro meets the Amazon, but the two do not mix due to differences in velocity, density and temperature. At the meeting of the waters we often see grey and pink river dolphins, and the local fishermen. Second stop is Lake Janauary, a watershed receiving water from both the Amazon and Rio Negro rivers. We will visit a restaurant run by local "caboclo" river people and walk through the treetops on a walkway to view giant Amazon waterlilies. We might see monkeys, hawks, alligators, morpho butterflies, toucans etc. After lunch in the boat we make our way up the Rio Negro to the Ariau river just before the first of the Anavilhanas islands for some piranha fishing and alligator hunting (only photos) at night. Overnight at the Over Look Jungle Lodge (Arara river).

DAY 03 - Morning rainforest hike at Arara. Visit with the Viana family, a traditional Amazon river family. Afternoon exploration of the first of the first of the Anavilhanas islands. Overnight at the mouth of the Cuieiras river

DAY 04-09 - Depart Cuieiras and travel through the Anavilhanas islands. A variety of rainforest hikes, canoeing side-trips, swimming and fishing excursions, and visits with Caboclo river families as the boat makes it's way to Jau National Park and up to the Rio Branco river, it's final destination.
