Mountain Bike Gran Sabana-Roraima
This
unique tour takes us through the world of the table mountains. We
start in Ciudad Bolívar and fly with small chartered airplanes
to the picturesque Indian village Kavac which is situated beneath
the steep walls of Auyan Tepui. From there we head to Kamarata and
Río Akanan where we start our paddling tour. Nine exciting
days are awaiting us. Far away from civilization we continue to
Canaima with the Auyan Tepui always in sight. We will gain unique
impressions and pass stunning landscapes. The tour terminates in
Canaima and can be booked the whole year. We will overnight in tents
or hammocks.
Description
Day 1 (-/L/D) At 8am in the
morning we fly from Ciudad Bolivar to Wonken, a missionary station
of the Pemon Indians right in the heart of Sabana Grande. After
two hours we land on a small runway. After lunch we will take our
bikes for a first ride. (10 km through savanna)
Day 2 (B/L/D) We drive along
Indian paths mainly through flat savanna. During rainy season the
paths are quite mudy, therefore bikes sometimes have to be pushed
or carried. We pass several rivers where we can refresh ourselves.
We stay in tents at the fork of the river at the Pampatameru rapids.
Day 3 (B/L/D) In the morning
an adventurous river crossing is expecting us. We have to swim through
Río Kukenan (approx. 25 m wide). Afterwards we cross an area
of bushland and hilly savanna to our overnight camp at the Apoipo
Indian settlement. Here we can stock up with food.
Day 4 (B/L/D) We drive on with
our bikes, now on a road for 4WD's to the Indian settlement Betania
which is close to the road Sta. Elena - El Pauji. This path is leading
us through dense forest. From there we head to the connecting road
which is 2 km away and continue to our overnight camp at a waterfall
(10 km).
Day 5 (B/L/D) Today we head
towards the Brasilian border, downhill to the El Polaca mine. It
was here that the miner Barabas found the famous diamond which was
supposedly sold to the Queen of England. After a short visit we
continue on another path to the road towards Sta. Elena. We stay
in tents in the savanna about 25 km before Sta. Elena.
Day 6 (B/L/D) After breakfast
we continue through the forest and later through savanna with the
Chirikayen Tepui always in sight. After approx. 20 km we will reach
the Indian settlement. Overnight stay in the settlement or the Japsis
waterfall at the foot of Chirikayen Tepui
Day 7 (B/L/D) In about 1,5
hours we will reach the top of Chirikayan. From there , weather
permitting, we have a great view over the neighbouring tepuis (Roraima,
Kukenan) and the savanna. After we get back to the bottom we head
towards Sta. Elena on Indian paths. After about 3 hours we reach
the last Venezuelan town before the Brazilian border. We stay overnight
at the beautiful camp of Camp Yakoo. Double rooms/bath
Day 8 (B/L/D) In the morning
there is time left to do some shopping. Around noon we take a jeep
heading north on a sealed road. After a short while the table mountains
appear in the distance and get closer and closer. One hour later
we reach San Francisco where we take a dirt road to Parai Tepui,
the starting point of our tour to Roraima. At Parai Tepui we get
our bikes ready and start. First of all a steep slope is awaiting
us, where we have to carry our bikes. We continue through hilly
savanna to the Kukenan river where we put up our tents.
Day 9 (B/L/D) Today we continue
through hilly savanna with Roraima and Kukenan always in front of
us. In the early afternoon we reach the base camp and after lunch
we can climb Roraima (approx. 1.200 m difference in altitude). After
approx. 5 hours we reach the top where we set up camp under a big
rock. The bikes stay in the base camp.
Day 10 (B/L/D) In the morning
we have time to explore Roraima. The black, rocky landscape is very
impressive, it feels like another world. The different kinds of
orchids and carnivorous plants are truly interesting. The highest
point of the tepui (2.800 m) permits stunning views over the neighbouring
tepuis. In the afternoon we go back to the base camp.
Day 11 (B/L/D) We will return
the same way to Parai Tepui where we arrive in the afternoon. Here
the jeep is awaiting us and takes us back to Sta. Elena. We stay
overnight again at the Camp Yakoo. Double rooms/bath
