South Brazil Tour With Whale Watching - 9 days/8 nights

First visit the Iguazu Falls, one of the unmissable natural sights in Brazil. Then continue on to Curitiba for the most impressive train journey in Brazil and some quaint colonial villages. After a couple of nights in the region to relax or enjoy the rainforest, continue by road to the coast of Santa Catarina for a fantastic encounter with the Southern Right Whales.

Day 1: Arrival in Foz do Iguazu and private transfer to hotel. Rest of the day free. The world famous Iguazu Falls is a 3km-long wall of water inside tropical rainforest on the borders of Brazil and Argentina. Surrounded by two National Parks, the most magnificent waterfalls in the world are simply stunning.

Day 2: Full-day trip to the Argentinean side of the falls for a close view of the different falls and a visit to National Park. Many birds' species and small mammals can be easily spotted on the trails. B.

Day 3: Morning visit the Brazilian side of the Falls. Private transfer to the airport for your onward flight to Curitiba. Arrival at Curitiba airport. Transfer to a tourist class hotel. Rest of the day free to explore this pleasant city. B.

Day 4: Train Journey and Colonial towns
Completed in 1885 this railway line is still a testimony of great railway engineering and doubtless the most remarkable train journey in Brazil. On the way you will have fantastic views of the lush Serra do Mar, covered by Atlantic Rainforest. Visit Morretes and Antonina, two charming colonial towns, then spend the night in a lodge at the border of the Marumbi Estate Park.

Pick-up from Curitiba hotel at 07:00. You will be transferred to the railway station for the train journey from Curitiba to Morretes. After several tunnels, bridges and viaducts with vertical drops you will alight around 11:30 am at Morretes, a small colonial town. After a visit to the historical centre, you will have a typical lunch. After lunch, you will visit the historical town of Antonina (15 km far from Morretes) and Antonina Bay and back to Morretes for a 2-night stay at nearby Porto de Cima village. B, L, D

Day 5: Day free to relax on its lush gardens observing the rich birdlife with magnificent views of the highest peaks of Serra do Mar and the Atlantic Rainforest as a background. B, D

Day 6: Departure after breakfast by road to Praia do Rosa, on the coast of Santa Catarina. The journey takes around 6 hours but we will make stops on the way to rest and to enjoy the scenery. Arrival at Vida Sol e Mar Resort late afternoon. Rest of the day free. Dinner at the resort B, D

Every year, between June and November, the Southern Coast of Santa Catarina becomes the stage for an amazing natural spectacle, with the arrival of the Southern Right Whales. Escaping the Antarctic winter, they migrate north in search of warmer and calmer waters for reproduction and nurturing of their young calves. In the small, half-moon shaped bays of Santa Catarina, they come very close to the shore and in clear days they can be seen from your hotel room or the beachfront. The boat trips, though, are a must for a close encounter with these giant mammals.
In the nearby historical town of Laguna you will meet the famous dolphins that for generations help the local fishermen catch their fish.

Day 7: Breakfast briefing with the biologist or monitor that accompanies the whale watching trip. Transfer to Garopaba or Imbituba for the boat trip. After lunch, return to the hotel. Dinner at the hotel. B,L,D

(Please note that at the moment wet embarkation and landing is required.)

Day 8: After breakfast transfer to Imbituba to visit the Whale museum, located in the old whaling station (please note that the museum only opens on certain days). Afterwards continue to the fishing area of Laguna, a perfect place to spot dolphins. This "symbiotic" behaviour has been documented in many nature programs including a recent one by Animal Planet. Lunch in the area. Afternoon free back in Praia do Rosa and dinner at the hotel. B,L,D

Day 9: Breakfast and return transfer to Florianopolis airport. B
