The
Tambopata Amazon Lodge
Buildings
in harmony with the forest are constructed from local materials which
allow them to blend well into the exotic setting. "Style" can
be described as rustic comprising wooden, palm thatched, screened cabins
without electricity. Candles and lamps are used after dark making for
a relaxing natural ambiance. Solar energy is being introduced but only
exists for the administration building lighting, maintenance of batteries
for radio communications, in the kitchen area for food preparation and
for hot water for bathrooms. There is solar energy lighting in the suite
building. We are in the process of introducing solar energy for lighting
to all our rooms. A small generator is used minimally (to reduce noise,
pollution and similar). There are individual cabins which have a porch
with hammocks, table and chairs for relaxing. The superior rooms are 258
square feet and have either twin beds or a king saize bed. Suites are
366 square feet and have either 2 double beds or a king size bed. Both
room types have safety deposit
boxes and private bathrooms with hot water from solar
energy. The main building consists of a screened dining room, where meals
are served, and water, coffee, tea and bananas are available 24 hours
a day. There is an attached bar for socializing which has games and books
for entertainment. Overlooking the Tambopata River, a short distance from
the dining room, can be found the lecture and conference building for
slide show presentation as well as for studying. Along side is a small
museum and map room.
Trails leading from the lodge compound are constantly being maintained
and are being developed further to ensure safe and maximal access to the
different habitat types. The lodge boasts 25 kilometers of trail in total,
including those to the lake systems of Condenado and Sachavacayoc situated
on the opposite bank of the Tambopata River.
Naturalist
Guides are resident year round and are ready to introduce you to the marvels
of the Rain Forest. During a typical day at the lodge our guides bring
the forest to life by pointing out the important trees, flowers, medicinal
plants remedies, as well as assisting in sitting and identifying the birds,
mammals, reptiles, butterflies and other insects. In the evening short
lectures are scheduled which deal with special rain forest subjects and
give a chance to delve further into the mysteries and marvels of this
ecosystem.
Meals are prepared by our professional and
dedicated staff from a mixture of local rain forest products as well as
more traditional foods. Some meals are distinctly Peruvian others are
International in flavor.
River transport to and from the lodge is
completed by motorized dugout canoe, shaded and equipped with cushions
for your comfort and life jackets for your security. Canoes are managed
by experienced qualified drivers with a deep knowledge of the river and
its wildlife.
Macaw clay licks are one of the most spectacular
natural phenomenon's in Amazonia. On the Tambopata river, approximately
90 km. up river from the town of Puerto Maldonado, 2-2.5 hours from the
lodge, you can find the Chuncho clay lick. Tambopata Eco Lodge offers
special excursions to visit this magnificent area. (El Chuncho package)
The action starts just before dawn as the first few rays
of sun are braking through the sky and expose the eroded river bank that
is known as the Chuncho clay lick. The first sign of activity will be
the ear piercing squawks of the parrots, parakeets and macaws as they
start to arrive in the area. Some of the birds have flown here from as
far as seven kilometers away. Depending on the species the birds will
arrive in discrete pairs or in huge flocks. When they arrive in the area
they head straight for the trees were they will perch for some time before
they decide if it is safe to eat the clay or not. When they have secured
the area the first descent from the trees to the cliff will be made by
the small parrots and parakeets. Next the small macaws such as the chestnut
fronted macaw and the red bellied macaw will fly down and land on the
cliff face. The next birds to descend are the large red and green macaws,
the spectacular scarlet macaws and the beautiful blue and yellow macaws.
You will be treated to an amazing display of color as these birds demonstrate
why they are known as the 'winged rainbows'. You will have the best seats
in the house to watch these magnificent birds consume there daily breakfast
of clay. The viewing point is on a hidden beach approximately 40 meters
away from the clay face.
Collpa Colorado, the largest known macaw clay-lick in
the world, is located on the Tambopata river about 120 km upstream from
Puerto Maldonado (4-5 hrs upstream from the lodge) and is one of the most
spectacular natural phenomena in all Amazonia. Tambopata Eco Lodge offers
special excursions to visit this magnificent area. (Scarlet and Colorado
