Uyuni Salt Lake Tours

Uyuni Salt Lake, located at 3 hours from Potosi and at a day bus-train connection from La Paz, an area of magnificent beauty. It looks like an ocean of salt, impressive in its vastness and smooth white surface. It contains the largest bed of lithium of the world. Nearby, large sculptures of eroded rocks can also be seen. Experience the highest and largest Salt Lake in the world (10.000 Km2) surrounded by an impressive panorama. On its edge, visitors can see natives extracting salt with lost in time methods. Drive across this salt flats to “Isla Pescado” an oasis, where you can find unique flora and fauna, which was completely isolated for thousands of years by a vast plain of salt. Uyuni is roughly 25 times the size of the better-known Bonneville Salt Flats in the United States. Salar de Uyuni is estimated to contain 10 billion tons of salt of which less than 25,000 tons is extracted annually. All miners working in the Salar belong to Colchani's cooperative. They work from dawn to dusk and most of them do not take a lunch break in order to take advantage of time, getting energy by chewing coca leaves. Every November, Salar de Uyuni is also the breeding grounds for three species of South American flamingos - Chilean, James's and Andean.
