Laguna de Los Condores Trek - 5 days / 4 nights

Laguna de los Condores (Lake of the Condors and some times called Lake of the Mummies) became one of the country’s most important Inca sites in 1997 when archaeologists discovered hundreds of mummies in a mausoleum built into the steep surrounding cliff-face. Those bodies are now conserved in the nearby Leymebamba Museum.

DAY ONE: VISIT KUELAP FORTRESS AND TRANSFER TO LEYMEBAMBA VILLAGE
Arrival to Chachapoyas at 10:20 am and departure from Chachapoyas at 10:30 am in order to visit the archeological monument of Kuélap, across the Utcubamba valley, with a special landscape among the dry tropical forest within this valley. Arrival at Macro’s viewer in order to explain the function of this archeological remain, taking photos. Then we will go up towards Kuélap by cable car arriving like that the place call La Malca, where we will start to hike to Kuelap for 30 minutes. After it you will start to visit the most important monument of the northern of Peru, like that our guide will tell you hypothesis, theories, history, conservation efforts, scientific studies and the last findings. Likewise, from the inside we will have a spectacular view of the four cardinal points (East, West, North and South). Then we will return to La Malca place to take the cable car to get back to Tingo Village, where we will have our lunch. After lunch we will continue the tour towards Leymebamba’s community. Arrival and transfer to the selected hotel to sleep. DAY TWO: TREKKING AND RIDING TO LAGUNA DE LOS CONDORES After breakfast, we start trekking at 7 am along the Inca trail which includes a typical cloud forest, habitat for the Andean Condor, Gray Breasted Mountain Toucan, golden headed Quetzal, Tanagers, among other local birds. Leymebamba’s community is located to 2200 meters high from sea level, during our walk we will have to go up to 3800 meters (it’s a hill called La Fila; hence it is possible to observe the branches of the Andes’ Mountain chains on the northeastern side). We will walk down this hill, towards La Laguna de Los Condores and through the mountains and canyons including exuberant vegetation. Arrival and stay in a cottage or tents. DAY THREE: VISIT THE LAKE OF CONDORES AND THE MAUSOLEUMS
After breakfast, we will walk towards the archeological remain called Llacta Cocha, located to the lake’s border (2700 meters high from sea level), then we will cross the Laguna by boat enjoying the landscape and forest where it is possible to watch local birds such as tanagers, hummingbirds, wild ducks among others. Arrival and visit the mausoleums (219 of their mummies were rescued in perfect state of conservation, including 2500 pieces, among ceramics of different cultures, Chachapoya and Inca style-like textiles, pyro-engraved mates, wood-graving glasses, among others used as offerings by our ancestors). Likewise, hence we have an amazing view of the entire lake. After visiting the place, we will have lunch and then a whole afternoon to walk around the lake and relax. Dinner and stay in a local cottage or tents DAY FOUR: HIKING AND RIDING HORSES GET BACK TO LEYMEBAMBA After breakfast walking back towards Leymebamba’s community and along the same road. Once in town we will head to the museum. This is the most important interpretation center of Chachapoya culture. Here we can observe more than 219 mummies in perfect state of conservation as well as over 2500 artifacts among ceramics, textiles, craving, quipus (Inca’s accounting system), among others, used as offerings by brave Chachapoya people. This important museum belong the community of Leymebamba, after our visit we will returning to Chachapoyas city. DAY FIVE: TRANSFER TO CHACHAPOYAS AIRPORT After breakfast we will pick up you from your hotel and transfer to Chachapoyas airport to fly to Lima END OF OUR SERVICE |
