Trek
For
those who love to hike, the Roraima Trek is one of the highlights
of Venezuela. The table mountains belong to the oldest rock
formation in the world. During millions of years they have been
formed. Most of the vegetation you find there, grows only at the
table mountains. The Roraima tepui is the highest in Venezuela.
Bizzare stone formations, barren rock landscape and unique plants
shape the landscape. A three day tour brings us up to the Roraima.
At the top we make a day excursion and visit the valley of crystals
and the place where three countries meet - Brazil, Venezuela and
Guyana. This tour can take place any time during the year. During
the rainy season we recommend it in combination with a boat trip
to Salto Angel.
1st
day - We meet in Sta. Elena early in the morning. From here
we go by Jeep to San Francisco de Yuruani. Here we turn into a sandy
street, that leads us to the indian village Parai Tepui. We may
see the Tepuis: the Warao-Tepui, the Kukenan and the Roraima. We
start our hike across the hills of La Gran Sabana until Kukenan
river. Over here we settle into our camp to stay overnight. If we
like to freshen up, we can take a bath in the river. about 5 hours
hiking
2nd day- Today we walk to the
base camp of the Roraima, crossing plains and hills, with the Roraima
always visible. In the early afternoon we arrive at the base camp,
right in front of the steep wall of the Roraima. about 4.5 hours
hiking
3rd
day- Ascend the Roraima (about 4.5 hours). The waters of these
Tepuis nourish all of the gigantic rivers, such as the Amazon, the
Orinoco and the Esequibo. As Cyclops, huge rocks gather up making
steep walls. Anywhere you find land you also find plenty of vegetation,
all kind of plants, mosses, cactuses and orchids. Here you
may see unusual species such as the Oreophynella toad, which looks
as a tiny monster and which can only be seen on the tepuis. After
5 hours hiking we reach this gigantic plain at 2.600 meter high.
We settle underneath a rock.
4th day - Today we have an exhausting
but nevertheless a very interesting day. We will explore the top
of the tepui, passing over rocks and crossing through valleys. The
valley of crystals is outrageous, as well as the variety of orchids
and the carnivourous plants. Weather permitting, we may aprreciate
the view of the neighboring tepuis.
5th
day- Today is time to say good-bye to the ancient world. We
decend to the base camp walking on to the river Kukenan. We cross
the river and get finally to the Tek river where we settle into
our camp. about 7.5 hours
6th day- After breakfast, we
walk back to the indian village Parai Tepui, where we continue on
by 4 WD vehicle. We get to the most beautiful waterfall in this
area, the "Quebrada de Jaspe". From there we continue
to Sta. Elena. about 3.5 hours
7th day-In the morning we drive
you to the airport.
