Chicamocha Canyon Trek
Barichara is surrounded by magnificent landscapes of the Chicamocha canyon that hikers will not be able to resist explor-
ing. This trek proposes to leave from this town until reaching the beautiful town of Los Santos, passing through the tobacco crops, going down to the bottom of the Chicamocha canyon and crossing the river at the first toll in Colombia. We will learn more about the Guane Indigenous, who occupied the region before the arrival of the Spaniards. A shorter version of this his trek can be done in 1 or 2 days, where the difference of the last option is to be able to go at a slower pace, sleep in the town of Jordan, which is located in the middle of the canyon, have the opportunity to see the town of Los Santos during the day and to take an exceptional coffee tour of the plantations of Finca El Roble where you can also spend the night. Day 1 : BUCARAMANGA- ZAPOTOCA
On day 1, you will be taken from Bucaramanga which is the capital of the Santander region, to San Vicente de Chucuri, which is approximately 85 km away from its capital and it is going to take about 2 hours by car. There a 4x4 is going to leave you in the rural area of the town, where you will start an amazing hike, 23 km of ancient trails starting at 2.400 m.a.s.l. passing by the rainforest ecosystems of Yariguíes National Park. You will head down to the town of Zapatoca located 1.700 m.a.s.l. Zapatoca is a hidden but beautiful colony style town, where you will rest. DAY 2 : ZAPATOCA – GUANE - BARICHARA On this day, you will have a 22 km hike starting at the Zapatoca lookout where you will have a first nice view of Chicamocha can- yon. You will walk by the “Lengerke” trails, which are ancient cobblestone connections between the towns at the canyon. You will arrive in Guane; This town it’s one of the most authentic and non-touristy places you are going to cross through. It has a beautiful landscape and traditional food and architecture. You can try the most traditional liquor named Sabajon that represents the region. It is only 9 km from Barichara and from Guane a car will take you to Barichara. DAY 3: BARICHARA - VILLANUEVA On day 3, you will do a 10 km hike on the west side of the canyon, where you will recognize different plantations like tobacco, cocoa, pineapple, avocado and coffee and will visit some of them, before arriving to Vil- lanueva, which is the 5th town to visit on this journey. Villanueva is at 1450 m.a.s.l. It has a beautiful landscape and most of the trail you will enjoy a perfect view from the Suarez River. There is not a big difference in elevation, so this day will be more about contemplation and enjoying the beauty of nature. Here you will rest. DAY 4: VILLANUEVA - JORDAN On this day you are going to start the journey from Villanueva town, where you will start a 10 kms hike down the canyon, in order to take advantage of the cool weather and the beautiful light of the morning. We will descend more than 1000 meters in order to reach the level of the river and make a break at a natural refuge in the town of Jordan, where we will have lunch. In the afternoon we will take advantage of the pool to cool off. We will have dinner and spend the night there in the ecolodge. DAY 5 : JORDAN – LOS SANTOS 08:00) – Breakfast, and after that check-out from the ecolodge. Then we will start our ascent of 5 km and 850 mts of elevation gain towards the beautiful town of Los Santos and its whitewashed houses. We will visit its enchanted streets together before having lunch in the town. In the afternoon we will go to El Roble coffee farm where we will have the opportunity in the afternoon to take a coffee tour in the middle of the exceptional plantations that produce the famous Mesa de Los Santos coffee. We will learn the details of its manufacturing process, from har- vesting to roasting, and we will be able to taste it in a very pleasant environment. |
