Self-drive Along Southern Route 40
- 16 Days From Bariloche to El Calafate
Day 1 San Carlos de Bariloche.
Arrival at Bariloche and pick up of the rented vehicle. After receiving the driving instructions specific for the region, drive to the city. Accommodation and free time. (14 km driving - 30 minutes) Day 2 San Carlos de Bariloche. B Free day to take National Route 40 northbound and travel the outstanding path of the Seven Lakes. (180 km driving - 6-7 hours) Day 3 San Carlos de Bariloche / Esquel. B We leave Bariloche heading south to Esquel. On the way, we suggest you take a detour to Pampa Linda to get to Cerro Tronador. (361km driving, including 100 km on gravel roads - 7-8 hours) Day 4-5 Esquel. B We suggest you to visit Los Alerces National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Piedra Parada, a curiosity in the middle of the steppe or if you prefer adrenaline, enjoy rafting down the Corcovado River. Day 6 Esquel / Rio Mayo. B Continue exploring National Route 40, towards Rio Mayo. It's a five-hour drive, with a few stops along the way to admire the view and enjoy the remote scenery. Day 7 Rio Mayo / Los Antiguos. B In the morning, departure to Los Antiguos, located in the heart of Patagonia. On the way we suggest you take a detour to the Petrified Forest of Sarmiento. Day 8 Los Antiguos. B Free day to explore the region by crossing into Chile to visit the Marble Chapels formation. Day 9 Los Antiguos / Posadas Lake. B Travel along Route 41, which connects Los Antiguos with Lake Posadas. A scenic route that seeks to preserve the local fauna. Day 10 Lago Posadas. B Free day to explore the Patagonia Park or visit the Cueva de las Manos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Day 11 Lago Posadas / Gobernador Gregores. B Departure to take route 40 and arrive at a village with a privileged location. Day 12 Gobernador Gregores / El Chalten. B Continue along RN 40 south to reach El Chalten, the National Capital of Trekking. Day 13 El Chaltén. B Enjoy the variety of hikes available in El Chaltén. Day 14 El Chaltén / El Calafate. B At the desired time leave the National Capital of Trekking to reach the land of the Glaciers. Day 15 El Calafate. B Visit the Perito Moreno Glacier, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Day 16 El Calafate. B Free time until the time of your flight. Operational note: Day 6: Chile Chico Border Crossing works from 8 AM to 8 PM, according to the season. In you are willing to cross it, please inform us just to process the crossing permission. Suggested Season: October to late April Pick up: Bariloche Airport Drop Off: El Calafate Airport To keep in mind: - The program includes rented car and accommodation according to itinerary.
