DAY 1: PUERTO MONTT AIRPORT – CASTRO (171 KM / 106 MI)
Pick up your rental car at the Puerto Montt airport and get ready to explore the wonders of the Chiloé Island. Start your adventure heading south and cross the Chacao Channel by ferry. After arriving, you can visit the town of Dalcahue famous for its gastronomy and local church. Afterward continue your travels to Castro, the capital of the island, a city famous for its stilt houses built above the water’s edge. In addition the town boasts the massive San Francisco Church, completely built out of native wood. Overnight in Castro. DAY 2: CASTRO – TANTAUCO PARK (110 KM / 68 MI) After having breakfast head south on the main highway to the magnificent Tantauco Park. This place is home to a great diversity of vegetation and fauna, a true representation of the Chilean Patagonia. While at the entrance of the park known as Yaldad, take your time to explore the visitors’ center and to hike the nearby trails. Afterwards continue your drive to an area known as Chaiguata where you will have a variety of activities to choose from including trekking. There are two low difficulty trails that take you over hanging bridges and across walkways to amazing lookout points. This is the perfect opportunity to relax and experience deep contact with nature. At the end of the day, enjoy a delicious and simple dinner right there in the park. Overnight in Tantauco Park. (B, D) DAY 3: TANTAUCO PARK This morning start your adventure by leaving your accommodation and following the well-marked trails of the sector. Along the way, you will pass through evergreen forests and if lucky, you may even spot the famous huillín, a native river otter. Additionally, the journey will take you across a hanging bridge, an ideal place for spectacular photographs. After a few hours, you will reach the end of the trail. The return trip will be equally interesting as you can take a slightly different path that will lead you past impressive wetlands before reaching the main road. Towards evening, enjoy a well-deserved dinner in the vicinity. Overnight in Tantauco Park. (B, BL, D) DAY 4: TANTAUCO PARK – ANCUD (180 KM / 112 MI) In the morning, you will say goodbye to your incredible surroundings and start heading north to the city of Ancud. On your way you can stop in Castro, once again the ideal place to have lunch (not included). Subsequently you will continue to Ancud where you will start driving along the western coast to reach the natural monument of Puñihuil where Humboldt and Magellan penguins breed together. There we will board a boat for an up-close look at the penguins. Along the way, a variety of sea birds will accompany you creating a one of a kind scenery. Overnight in Ancud (B) DAY 5: ANCUD – PUERTO MONTT OR PUERTO VARAS (96 KM / 60 MI OR 112 KM / 70MI) Depending on your departure time, you can explore the city and its highlights such as the local church or handcraft market. Afterwards hit the road again and take a coastal road to Caulín a wonderful wetland home to a variety of avifauna. There you can also find several restaurants and enjoy lunch by the sea (not included). Subsequently, continue northbound to the Puerto Montt airport or Puerto Varas to drop off your vehicle and continue with your travels. DAY 1: PETROHUÉ – PUERTO MONTT – CASTRO (246 KM / 153 Mi)
After breakfast you will commence your drive back towards Puerto Montt where you will follow the road signs to Pargua where you will then cross the Chacao Channel by ferry to reach the Island of Chiloé. After arriving, you can visit the town of Chacao famous for its main square and the church of San Antonio. Afterward continue your travels to the city of Castro. This is the capital city of the island and is famous for its stilt houses build above the water’s edge. In addition the town boasts the massive San Francisco Church, completely built out of native wood. Overnight in Castro. (B) DAY 2: CASTRO – DALCAHUE – CUCAO NATIONAL PARK (100 KM / 62 MI) Today your drive will begin with a short detour to Dalcahue where you can explore the town’s waterfront or visit the local market featuring wide range arts and crafts. Additionally you can visit the museum and church (one of the 16 cathedrals declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO). After sightseeing return back in direction of Castro and head to the Cucao National Park home to over 43,057 hectares (94,725 acres) of coastal dunes, rivers, diverse vegetation, fauna, lakes, beaches and a variety of breathtaking sceneries. Overnight near the Cucao National Park. (B) DAY 3: CUCAO NATIONAL PARK – PUERTO MONTT (229 KM / 142 MI) In the morning commence your drive back to Puerto Montt to drop off you rental vehicle. Along the way, take advantage of the drive and stop in the town of Ancud famous for its museum, the San Antonio Fortress and the local market featuring a wide range of seafood and handmade crafts.
