Ecological Trekking in Paraty and the Joatinga Reserve
|
South of Rio, the so called Green Coast is a unique combination of mountains, tropical rainforest, crystal water lagoons and untouched tropical islands. The Ecological Reserve Joatinga is one example, and the tour will trek across several fishing communities, where explorers will be able to learn their lifestyle and customs. At the end, we will also visit the beautiful colonial town of Paraty and its romantic and warm atmosphere.

DAY 1 – Origin – Rio de Janeiro – Paraty
Airport arrival at Rio de Janeiro and regular transfer to the colonial town of Paraty, where all the treasures sent by the Portuguese to Europe arrived from Minas Gerais via the Estrada Real. Arrival to Paraty and transfer to our pousada. Accommodation. DAY 2 – Paraty – Ponta Negra (B,L,D)
After breakfast we meet our guide who will accompany us for the next days. We take a local bus towards the town where we start our trek, passing through a part of Atlantic rainforest. For 4 hours of moderate trekking, we arrive to Ponta Negra beach. We will then understand the isolated conditions of these fishing communities, but also the happiness and simplicity of their lifestyle. Accommodation. DAY 3 – Ponta Negra (B,L,D)
After breakfast we take a moderate/difficult rainforest hike of 5 hours that will take us to the small Saco Bravo natural waterfall. The 15 meter falls that make a small swimming pool over viewing the ocean are breathtaking for their natural beauty. In the afternoon, we will have free time to interact with locals and learn about their lifestyle. Accommodation. DAY 4 - Praia de Ponta Negra – Pouso da Cajaíba (B,L,D)
This is the longest trekking day, with moderate/difficult sections for a total of 6 hours. We will trek through forests and deserted beaches that make a special scenery with the mountains encountering the sea. In the evening, we reach Pouso da Cajaíba, our final destination where we’ll stay in seashore houses. Accommodation. DAY 5 – Pouso da Cajaíba – Paraty (B,L)
During this fourth trekking journey, after breakfast, we will trek for 6 hours along moderate/difficult parts of Atlantica Rainforest between rivers and forest towards the Saco de Mamanguá, known to be the only tropical fiord in the world. From there, we continue by canoe to Paraty Mirim, where our public transport bus will take us back to Paraty. Accommodation. DAY 6 – Paraty – Rio de Janeiro – Destination (B)
Group transfer to Rio de Janeiro airport from where we will fly to our next destination. USEFUL INFORMATION
o We recommend a 10-15 kgs backpack for trekking leaving the rest of the luggage at Paraty. If you have a raincoat with the possibility of putting the bag inside, it is recommended to take it. o Insect repellent and sunscreen throughout the year.
"The 4 day tour in Paraty was the highlight of our entire 4 week trip through Brazil to be honest. Sergio was an amazing guide and the villages we stayed in and the locations we visited were incredible. An amazing experience. Thanks a lot for organising a modified version." Phil |
