Lake District and Chiloe Wildlife Tour

DAY 1 ENDEMICS OF THE TEMPERATE RAINFOREST (Morning arrival to Puerto Montt)
Our birding day will be focus on the elusive, tame and cryptic birds that inhabits this unique ecosystem known as the Valdivian Rainforest or Southern Temperate Rainforest. The forest itself is a gem. The exuberant and dense vegetation is home of specialties that any birder wants to find once visiting the region. We will be walking through the trails looking for the four species of the Rhinocryptidae family as the Chucao, Black-throated Huet Huet, Ochre- flanked and Magellanic Tapaculo. The park is also the place to look for other specialties as the Magellanic Woodpecker, White-throated Treerunner, and Thorntailed Rayadito. With some luck we can also have the chance to spot the Chilean Hawk and Buteo raptors that inhabits these latitudes. On the way back from the park we will also have some time to scan the shore of the Reloncaví fjord looking for waterfowl and shorebirds. Breakfast and box lunch included. Overnight in Puerto Varas at Weisser Haus or similar DAY 2 THE BASIN AND BIRDLIFE OF THE RIVER MAULLIN DELTA The mouth of the Maullín river is one of the best spots for birding in Chile. More than the 50% of the migratory birds that visit the country chooses this area as residence for the southern spring-summer time. Departure will be early in the morning to reach the birding area at the best time to spot birds. After a scenic driving through agricultural fields and grasslands we will reach this rich chain of wetlands facing the Pacific Ocean. From the rocky coasts of cormorants, sandpipers, shearwaters, terns and petrels to hidden lagoons, estuaries and ponds where we will have the chance to spot in a good day more than 50 species of birds as pintails, ducks, grebes, whimbrels, godwits, flamingos (only during fall-winter, till Oct.), kingfishers, skimmers, cinclodes, ibises, lapwings and many more. Breakfast, box lunch included. Overnight in Puerto Varas at Weisser Haus or similar DAY 3 PENGUINS, BIRDS & FAUNA OF THE HUMBOLDT CURRENT Early departure to take a ferry to the Archipelago of Chiloé. During the 40 minutes of navigation we will have great views of the Andean range and the first villages of the island with the typical wooden towers of the churches. Our target today will be the observation of sea mammals and birds, visiting the only breeding colony of Humboldt and Magellanic Penguins and a route of coastal wetlands with a great diversity of birds species, from long distant migrants shorebirds to waterfowl and passerines. Breakfast, lunch, dinner included. Overnight in Ancud at Nuevo Mundo or similar DAY 4 THE CHEPU SUNKEN FOREST AND RETURN TO MAINLAND A very early starting visiting the amazing sunken forest of the river Chepu. Home of a wide array of birds plus a great place to look for some mammals of the south of Southamerica as the Pudu, the River Otter and if we are lucky enough, Darwin Fox. After the navigation we will have a quick snack at a local family home before we head back to the mainland and arrive to Puerto Montt airport in the early afternoon.
