Hiking Amongst the Volcanoes

This is a 7 day hiking tour in the outback of the beautiful northern part of the Lake District, with overnights in quaint lodges.

DAY 1: LA ARAUCANIA AIRPORT – CAUTIN VALLEY
After arriving to the La Araucania Airport situated 20 km outside the city of Temuco we will be transported to our countryside lodge located in picturesque Cautin Valley. Once we check in and receive a welcome drink, our first exciting outdoor adventure starts when we transfer to the beginning of the Lolco hiking trail. From there we will commence an easy 3 hour hike in direction of the Lonquimay Volcano flank cone dubbed Navidad (Christmas), due to its eruption on the 25th of December 1988. The walk amongst sand and ashes will take us to the crater positioned at 1,870 masl. There, we will be privileged to spectacular views of the Lonquimay, Tolhuaca, Callaqui and Copahue Volcanos as well as lava fields and lagoons. Overnight near Malalcahuello. (3 Hrs. Hiking)(D) DAY 2: HIKING MALALCAHUELLO/NALCAS RESERVE After a nice breakfast we will leave the hotel and arrive to the entrance of Malalcahuello/Nalcas. This is a protected area comprising two adjoining national reserves located in the Andes. It is there where we will commence a 6 hour medium level hike amid stunning natural landscapes. Amongst the many highlights of the day include the Sierra Nevada and Lonquimay Stratovolcano, the active Llaima Volcano and an abundance of regional flora such as Araucaria forests, Patagonia Oak, Nothofagus Antarctica and many others. Overnight near Malalcahuello. (6 Hrs. Hiking)(B, BL, D) DAY 3: HIKING SIERRA NEVADA STRATOVOLCANO Today we will go on an easy 4 hour hike of Sierra Nevada. This volcanic complex on the Chile/ Argentina border in one of the remotest parts of the Central Andes covers a total of 225 km2. Boasting incredible sights the trails are dotted with lush vegetation offering picture perfect moments. Our destination for the day will be a spectacular lookout point where we will be able to observe several dominant cascades. Along the hike we will also have views of several nearby volcanos, the town of Malalcahuello and the city of Curacautin. In the afternoon we will return to our hotel for a little rest and a lovely dinner. Overnight near Malalcahuello. (4 Hrs. Hiking)(B, BL, D) DAY 4: MALALCAHUELLO – CONGUILLIO NATIONAL PARK - MELIPEUCO In the morning we will have an enjoyable breakfast and then relocate to the Conguillio National Park. There we will start on a 6 hour medium level hike along a nearby lagoon home to several bird species and bordered by green trees. We will then continue on the Los Carpinteros trail passing ancient Araucaria and Coihue trees. About mid excursion we will reach the Conguillio Lake where will take a little time to rest and enjoy lunch. Afterwards we will be transferred to the Sierra Nevada trail where we will complete our hike and arrive to breathtaking lookout points. The day will end as we make our way via vehicle to our new hotel accommodation consisting of unique and individual outdoor domes where we will enjoy a delectable dinner. Overnight at Nevados de Sollipulli. (6 Hrs. Hiking)(B, BL, D) DAY 5: HIKING VERANDAS VALLEY Our morning will entail a nice 4 hour hike through the Verandas Valley where we will pass green pastures, old mining sites and thermal pools. This will be a roundtrip hike to and from the hotel where we will have an up-close look at the surrounding region. For the afternoon we will have some much deserved time at leisure to enjoy the amenities of our lodge such as a soothing soak in the outdoor hot tubs or visiting the sauna for a little relaxation. Overnight at Nevados de Sollipulli. (4 Hrs. Hiking)(B, BL or L, D) DAY 6: HIKING TO SOLLIPULLI VOLCANO This full day will consist in an easy 6 hour hike from our hotel through Valdivian forest and prehistoric trees. As we slowly climb altitude we will reach the flank of the Sollipulli ice-filled volcanic caldera located within the boundaries of the Villarrica National Reserve. Towards the end of the hike we will be rewarded with amazing sights of nearby volcanoes and lagoons. Overnight at Nevados de Sollipulli. (6 Hrs. Hiking)(B, BL, D) DAY 7: HIKING AN OLD LUMBER MILL – LA ARAUCANIA AIRPORT Just after breakfast we will head on a 4 hour easy hike in direction of an old lumber mill. Once at our destination we will have a glimpse into what used to be a thriving timber yard complete with steam sawmill and surrounded by extensive native forest. Now deserted the location reminds us of the regions origins, as well as the importance forestry plays in Chile’s economy. After our tour of the grounds we will return to the lodge for lunch and then be taken to the La Araucania Airport for our departure flight. (4 Hrs. Hiking) (B, L) |
