Chapada dos Guimarães, which has dazzling views over the Pantanal. interesting rock formations and nice waterfalls, makes a great complement to the wildlife-rich Pantanal. It also has different species of birds, if you are a birder, and, because of it's altitude, is cooler than the Pantanal. So a lot of people in Cuiaba go there during the weekend and holidays.

Sample 4 day ItineraryDay 1 Pick-up at the airport and immediate transfer to the traditional town of Poconé with introduction to the geological formation and flora characteristics, then to the lodge, arriving there after a brief safari along the Transpantaneira park-road with many stops to observe its rich fauna. Arrival in time to do the check-in and an afternoon jeep safari through the flooding fields and visiting an ‘island of vegetation’ where many birds nests (Hyacinth Macaws, Jabiru Storks) might be observed. Back to the lodge for a brief time, then we depart again for a night safari – using open vehicles especially equipped with flashlights to spot night behaved animals, such as foxes, deer, puma, jaguar, tapir, etc. Dinner and overnight.
Day 2 . In the early morning, we do an overland safari through the Termites mound-hills, trying to see the Giant Anteater. After breakfast, the jeep safari will visit a remote stream with a large concentration of birds (including Hyacinth Macaws in their nests), many caimans and some otters. In the afternoon, we do an overland safari through the fields and forests, in the Jaguar territory, with a good possibility of seeing Americas’ third largest cat. Back to the lodge for a brief time, then we depart again for a night safari – using open vehicles especially equipped with flashlights to spot night behaved animals, such as foxes, deer, puma, jaguar, tapir, etc. Dinner and overnight. Day 3 - In the early morning, we do an overland safari through the Termites mound-hills, trying to see the Giant Anteater. Transfer to Cuiabá and on to the Chapada Tablelands, climbing 500m throughout the cliffs of the Brazilian Central Plateau in only 67 km for observing a gorgeous sunset in a large panorama that includes the water spring of three very important rivers that form the Pantanal. At the end of the afternoon, visit to the Brides’ Veil, the largest waterfall in the region. Then, on to the pleasant Chapada dos Guimarães for dinner and overnight in the suburbs of the town. Day 4 - In the morning, visit to the waterfalls circuit, with bathing in some of them. Continuation to the the next extension or drive back to the CGB Cuiabá airport or hotel. Optional Extra Day CHAPADA DOS GUIMARÃES In the morning, visits to the Rio Claro springs. Then, to Cidade de Piedra, to see it from it’s top. Sunset at the Alto do Céu panoramic view. Prices include: transportation, accommodations (standard rooms at Pousada Piuval and Sitio Cambara), guided touring, meals from dinner on day one through lunch on last day or from lunch on day one through breakfast on last day, but not drinks, except for coffee and fruit juices with breakfasts and water on tours

5 Days 1st day – Arrival: photo-safari down the Transpantaneira Park road and introduction walk Meeting and greeting at Cuiaba airport. After a briefing on your trip, departure at 13h20 or 17h00, depending on your flight schedule. This transfer is divided into two different stages. The first is a journey on a paved road along farms and cattle ranches. After reaching Poconé – we take the Transpantaneira Park Road at km “0” (108 km / 67.1 mi. from Cuiaba). This is a park road at its best, allowing us to drive above the water level, watching the flora and fauna of the Pantanal ecosystem – a photo safari along 146 km of dirt road with several stops along the way for photos and information. Welcome drink on arrival and accommodation. Later, the guide will lead you into an introductory walk through the surroundings of the lodge, explaining our concepts and many conservation projects. Continue to the Great Egret Lookout, a 12 m / 39 ft. high observation tower. After dinner, night walk under the Southern Hemisphere sky. (D) 2nd day – Pantanal: Canoeing and trekking After breakfast, take a photo safari through private dirt roads towards the Clarinho River. Reaching its banks, board a canoe and paddle down the river, exploring the forest that grows by the riverbanks and mangroves. Here lives a colony of “ariranhas” – giant river otters. With some luck, you may spot a family playing with their babies and teaching them how to swim and fish. Chance of fishing the elusive piranha, not an easy task, but fun. Enjoy a barbecue lunch under the shadow of the trees (*). Hammocks available to enjoy a “siesta”. Return to the Lodge in time for the afternoon tea. Later on, trek the Howler Monkey trail to the Howler Monkey Tower, our highest observation point – 25 m high -, for a magnificent view of the sunset. After dinner, join a night drive in search of nocturnal animals. (B, L, D) (*) If the Sentinela Camp is not accessible (depending on the weather and terrain conditions), this canoeing tour will take place on the Corixo River. In that case, we will return to the lodge for lunch. 3rd day – Pantanal: Horseback riding and trekking After breakfast, enjoy a horseback ride, which will allow you to explore the diversity of the Pantanal landscape including some flooded areas of the Pantanal plain. The Pantaneiro horse are docile and has adapted, through the centuries, to eat with its nose underwater. In this region, the horse is the Pantaneiros’ best friend, a daily companion during work and leisure. Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, trek the Rondon Trail towards the 13 m high Jabiru Stork Tower, where you can watch a Jabiru Stork nest. Return to Araras Eco Lodge for dinner and overnight. (B, L, D) 4th Day – Departure from Pantanal to the great Savanna Early rising, to witness the awakening of the Pantanal at dawn. Breakfast and departure to Chapada dos Guimarães passing by impressive rocks formation. Outstanding scenario to admire until the end of the trip. 3 hours trip from Araras Eco Lodge. Lunch and Visit to Chapada Town historic centre and to the Geodesic Mark of South America for a breathtaking view over the plain. Check in at the charming Park Eco Lodge. Birds singing and waterfalls add to the enjoyment of this trail. The walk ends with a visit to the Bridal Veil Waterfall and lunch at a local restaurant. Returning to the Park Eco lodge, enjoy the private trails of the property and a walk to the observation tower. This is the place to be at sunset.
