Self-drive Along the Northern Route 40
- 11 Days From Mendoza to Salta
Day 1 Mendoza.
Arrival at the airport and pick up of the rented vehicle. Time at leisure to visit the wineries in Maipu or Lujan de Cuyo. (11 km driving - 20 minutes) Day 2 Mendoza. B Do not miss the chance to travel on Route 7 through the High Mountain Trail where it is possible to admire the Aconcagua Hill. (408 km driving - 7-8 hours) Day 3 Mendoza / El Chiflon. B The next destination is El Chiflon, gateway to the well-known De la Luna Valley (Moon’s Valley). (347 km driving - 5-6 hours) Day 4 El Chiflon/ V. Union - return. B Start driving early and visit two unique parks: De la Luna Valley, in San Juan and Talampaya, in La Rioja. (267 km driving - 4 hours) Day 5 El Chiflon / Belén. B The trip continue along Route 40 towards Chilecito crossing the De Miranda slope to continue towards Belén. (330 km driving - 5 hours) Day 6 Belén / Cafayate. B Start driving, visiting the Shincal Ruins in Londres and then continue to the Quilmes’ Ruins in Tucumán and finish in Cafayate, Salta. (425 km driving, including 28 km on gravel roads - 8 hours) Day 7 Cafayate / Cachi. B Today dedicate the day to two important ravines: in the morning, Cafayate Gorge, and in the afternoon the De las Flechas Gorge, along Route 40. (198 km driving, including 161 km on gravel roads - 5 hours) Day 8 Cachi / San Antonio de los Cobres. B We continue to San Antonio de los Cobres through the Abra del Acay. Take the necessary precautions for one of the most beautiful roads, but with its difficulties. (134 km driving, including 124 km on gravel roads - 4 hours) Day 9 San Antonio de los Cobres / Purmamarca. B If you had time, you could take a detour to the Polvorilla Viaduct and continue to Purmamarca (Jujuy), passing through Salinas Grandes. (253 km driving, including 118 km on gravel roads - 5-6 hours) Day 10 Purmamarca / Salta. B Spend the day exploring the Humahuaca Gorge, a Cultural and Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO. We recommend a detour to El Hornocal (Hill of the 14 Colours). (352 km driving, including 42 km on gravel roads - 6 hours) Day 11 Salta. B End of the adventure. Drop off the car at the airport. (9 km driving - 20 minutes) Suggested Season: Avoid December to March, because of the rainy season Pick up: Mendoza Airport Drop Off: Salta Airport Operational note: Day 8: Operable only from April to November. In case the road is not in appropriate conditions, we recommend replacing it by Cachi- Salta- San Antonio de los Cobres. To keep in mind:
This was just a sample itinerary and can be modified to suit your interests. For instance: Day 3 - add another day in Mendoza to visit more wineries or to do an adventure activity Day 4 Mendoza / Barreal. B Departure to the province of San Juan to reach Barreal, a unique valley. During the night we recommend you to observe the sky in the Provincial Park El Leoncito. Day 5 Barreal / El Chiflón. B Departure for Ischigualasto Provincial Park to visit the Moon Valley. After an intense day, we arrive at El Chiflón, an ideal stop on the way for resting. Day 6 El Chiflón. B In the morning, departure for the Talampaya National Park, where we continue to discover curious formations. In the afternoon we recommend a walk through the El Chiflón Provincial Park. Day 7 El Chiflón / Chañarmuyo. B Departure in a northerly direction to cross the Cuesta de Miranda and arrive in Chilecito where the highest cable car in the world is located. After a tour of the town, continue on to Chañarmuyo. Day 8 Chañarmuyo / Cafayate. B We suggest you start early to visit the ruins of Shincal in Catamarca, then continue to the ruins of Los Quilmes in Tucumán and finish the day in Cafayate. Day 9 - continue as in original itinerary |
