The puja of Raimondi, relative of the pineapple, can reach 12 meters high and produce more than 5 thousand flowers during the inflorescence stage. They tend to concentrate on forests above 4,000 meters high, which is a spectacle rarely seen. Then you will arrive at Pastoruri, one of the most popular tourist attractions of Huaraz since its accessibility allows whole families to enjoy the snow that is on the glacier although this has regressed considerably during the last years as a result of global warming. DAY 3 | LAGOON 69 Go on one of the most spectacular hiking excursions through the Andes Mountains to the Llanganuco and 69 lagoons. Starting from Huaraz, you will pass through the northern part of the Santa River valley known as the "Callejón de Huaylas", located between the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Negra mountain ranges. On the way, you can appreciate the most important peaks of the Cordillera Blanca, such as Huascarán (6,768 meters above sea level) -the highest mountain in Peru-, among other imposing mountains. In the valley, there are a series of picturesque Andean towns such as the city of Carhuaz and Yungay, where you will see the city buried by an avalanche in 1970. Start the ascent towards the Cordillera Blanca towards the Llanganuco stream. You will visit the two Llanganuco lagoons: Chinacocha with turquoise blue waters with varied high-Andean flora and Orcococha. This area is the heart of the Huascaran National Park, a natural area that protects biodiversity where the world's highest tropical ecosystems are located. Continue to Cebollapampa. After ascending a zigzagging path and crossing fields, you will arrive at "lagoon 69" (4,600 meters above sea level), located at the base of the impressive south-west face of the snow-capped Chacraraju mountain. Walk through the area where the guide will tell you about the high Andean environment. After a snack, you will start the return to Huaraz. You will discover the imposing walls of the Huandoy (6,395 m.a.s.l.) and Huascarán (6,768 m.a.s.l.), snow-capped peaks, which frame the turquoise lagoons of Llanganuco in the Huascarán National Reserve. DAY 3 | PASTORURI MOUNTAIN Leaving from Huaraz (3100 m.a.s.l.) we will go through the south of the Santa River valley, passing through the typical towns of Recuay, Ticapampa and Catac; from there we will go to the Pachacoto ravine, a natural area protected by the Huascarán National Park where the mountain landscape is characterized by the "ichu", typical vegetation of the "puna" or Andean plateau; where you can find the sparkling water springs of "Pumapampa" and the "Pumapashimin" water spring of varied color surrounded by cattails. In this region is the largest concentration of stands of "Puya Raimondi", an exotic specimen of the high Andean flora that reaches between 8 to 12 meters high and has the largest inflorescence of the plant kingdom reaching between 8,000 to 15,000 flowers, which produce millions of seeds. The Puya is the habitat of a diversity of Andean fauna, especially the giant hummingbird, as well as a series of rodents that shelter from predators among the thorny leaves of the puya. This region is also the habitat of the vicuña, the South American camelid highly prized for its fine wool. On our way, we will appreciate the Mururaju (5,688 m.a.s.l.), Huarapasca (5,418 m.a.s.l.) and Tucu (5,300 m.a.s.l.) snow-capped peaks among others as we approach the roadhead (4,850 m.a.s.l.) from where we will begin our hike to the glacier edge of Pastoruri (5,200 m.a.s.l.). During our hike we will observe the glacial environment and the effects of climate change in the mountains, as well as fossil remains of past geological eras such as ferns and small mollusks. On our tour of the "climate change route", our guide will orient us on the glacial environment. Transfer to Huaraz.
