Tambopata Research Center
The Tambopata Research Center has been enlarged to be a 24 bedroom lodge built with the object of lodging tourists and researchers alike and of protecting the adjacent macaw clay lick. Tambopata Research Center is an excellent place for in depth explorations of Amazonian nature and wildlife. There are no humans nearby, so sightings of monkeys, macaws and other large species become more frequent. Jaguars are sometimes seen near the river bank! (35% of visitor's saw one in 2017)

Designed using traditional, low impact native architecture to provide the creature comforts necessary for enhancing the wilderness experience without compromising its authenticity. Bedrooms open out onto the surrounding rainforest, allowing you to enjoy this diverse ecosystem even during downtime, with wild animals, including monkeys, often visible from the lodge. 
The Research Center offers:
  • Unobstructed view of forest ten meters from lodge perimeter maximizes wildlife encounter possibilities..
  • Buffet meals combine international, Peruvian and local cuisine. Vegetarians are welcome.
  • Guides are young, English-speaking Peruvian biologists who. Additionally, the presence of professional researchers at different times of the year may present ample opportunity to interact with them.
  • An experienced, well-trained staff hired at a 2.5:1 tourist to staff ratio assures excellent service throughout your stay.
  • Walks on trails are kept at a 6:1 tourist to guide ratio, increasing wildlife encounter opportunities.
  • Two Macaw Claylicks – A trip to the Tambopata Research Centre includes a visit to the two most important clay licks in the region: Colorado and Chuncho. Visit these special portions of river bank while Macaws and parrots make a raucous and colorful spectacle which inspired a National Geographic cover story.
  • 5 Distinct Pristine Habitats – Close and easy hikes to bamboo, flood plain, terra firma, palm and riverine rainforest habitats.
  • Herds of White Lipped Peccaries – Tambopata Research Centers location inside a huge and pristine rainforest means peccaries roam the area. Herds of one hundred or more individuals visit the lodge garden frequently to gather nuts from its palm trees.
  • Macaw Research and Conservation –Much groundbreaking macaw conservation research has been carried out from the TRC and you will likely have the chance during your stay to talk with macaw biologists, ecologists and other experts staying at the TRC while they do fieldwork.
  • Canopy Tower – During your stopover at Refugio Amazonas you will be able to climb the 30 meter scaffolding tower for expansive views of the rainforest and sightings of colorful toucans and parrots against a green backdrop
  • Did you know? 35% of boats headed to TRC saw Jaguars in 2017! This is because the Tambopata region hosts plenty of peccaries, tapirs, and other animals that are food for them. So you get plenty of jaguars. In addition, much of the Tambopata River between before TRC is strictly protected wilderness. Therefore, this is precisely where you see the big cats.

The lodge now offers a la carte itineraries. The activities are offered 4 times a day - early morning, morning , afternoon and evening. Check with your guide for exact start times and to plan your itinerary, selecting 1 activity per time period. All excursions have a maximum of 6 people except for the Colorado Macaw Clay Lick and Sunset cruise, which allow 10 people, and the evening lecture

Tambopata Research Center, the most remote eco-lodge in South America, now has exclusive access which reduces travel time from the city from 8 hours to only 3 hours and a half. With this new route, explorers will be able to arrive at the lodge on the same day and thus maximize their experience in the heart of the Tambopata National Reserve

In summary:
  1. Expeditions to Tambopata Research Center will no longer include the first night at Refugio Amazonas
  2. Transfers will still have the escort of the National Police of Peru and will be accompanied by other lodges within the area.
  3. Travel journey will now be:
  • Airport - Office: 5 minutes
  • Office - River Port Philadelphia: 1 hour
  • River Philadelphia Port - TRC: 2 hours 30 minutes
  1. Leaving Puerto Maldonado at 1:30 pm travelers will arrive at Refugio Amazonas at 3:30 pm and to TRC at 5:00 pm (estimated time)
  2. The new check-out time at TRC will be at 7:30 am arriving at Puerto Maldonado office at 11:00 am (estimated time)
Thinking of providing the best experience to your travelers, all reservations from November 1st traveling to Refugio Amazonas and Tambopata Research Center will take this new route.
Our trip was wonderful! We saw so many types of birds and animals and it was a treat to be in the rainforest for almost a week. Both places were nice but we were really glad to be at TRC for 4 nights. They did a great job with vegan food as well. All in all, it was well worth the 2 year wait! Thanks for all your help over the last two years. My family really appreciates it.

 Biosafety Protocols
 
Because the safety of their guests and team is a priority for them, they present the essential protocols for theirr operation:
  1. Temperature measurement upon arrival of guests.
  2. We will request the use of masks throughout their stay.
  3. Guests will have antibacterial gel accessible all around the lodge.
  4. During transfers, guests must respect social distancing between reservations.
  5. Our buses and boats will operate at 50% of their capacity.
  6. Guests will participate in excursions and activities in small groups of 6 people per guide.
  7. Buffets are suspended until further notice. The food will be served fresh upon arrival of the guest to the dining room, respecting the due distance between reservation bubbles.
  8. We have reduced the time of Check-In and Check-Out.
  9. The rooms go through a disinfection process at Check Out.
Remember that the eco-lodges are open to the forest to maximize the guests' experience with nature, which allows adequate ventilation in all environments.
