Guyana ToursGuyana is a small South American nation, located just below the Caribbean Sea. It is the only English-speaking country in South America. 90% of the country’s population of 773,000 lives along the coast, leaving the country’s lush interior untouched. Guyana is 80 percent virgin rainforest. It’s also known as the “Land of the Giants” for its iconic oversize animal species, including the jaguar, the arapaima (the largest scaled fish in the world), the harpy eagle (the world’s biggest species of eagle), the world’s largest anteater and the world’s largest ants. With 910 species of bird, Guyana is a bird watcher’s paradise. Native species include the harpy eagle, bananaquit, black bellied whistling duck and the national bird, the hoatzin.

Guyana is once again ready to welcome international travellers. Eastern Airlines, American Airlines, Caribbean Airlines, and Suriname Airways are all currently offering service from the U.S. to Guyana. JetBlue recently launched its new nonstop service between New York (JFK) and Guyana (GEO). Flights will initially operate up to four times weekly. Caribbean Airlines is offering twice weekly flights between Toronto and Guyana with connections available from Trinidad and Barbados. Trans Guyana Airways is also offering service from Barbados and Suriname.
Anyone entering Guyana must present results of their PCR or Antigen COVID-19 test (taken within 72 hours of the scheduled flight). All travelers over the age of 12 must also provide proof of being fully vaccinated to enter Guyana. Children not old enough to be vaccinated are exempt. Travelers over the age of 12 who are not vaccinated should not travel to Guyana.
Travelers must provide a copy of their negative COVID-19 test and proof of vaccination to the airline at check-in, and to Port Health Officials upon arrival; test results should be in English to facilitate validation. If test results are more than 72 hours old upon flight departure for Guyana, the traveler must be re-tested at the airport at their own expense (fees will be collected by the airline before boarding from the traveler; COVID testing at the airport is approximately $85.00 USD and is subject to change). Once tested at the airport, travelers will be allowed to continue travel to their residence or hotel. The traveler must remain at their residence or hotel until receiving a negative test result; test results are generally available within four to six hours. If the traveler tests positive, the Government of Guyana will require the traveler to self-isolate or quarantine for up to 14 days.
Our main operator's policy is to only accept travelers that have been vaccinated and to only work with suppliers that have been vaccinated and lodges that have been certified as Safe to Travel by the Guyana Tourism Authority. These strong Covid protocols, small lodges, remote wilderness, excellent English-speaking guides, safe travel bubbles and wide open spaces make Guyana a very appealing choice of destination in these pandemic times.
Suriname has recently announced that travellers who are vaccinated and have a negative PCR within 72 hours of departure and have COVID insurance can now travel, while tiny French Guiana still remains closed. As soon as they reopen, we will start to operate again our best-selling Mysterious Three Guianas tour.

Guyana has been named the number one “Best of Ecotourism” destination in the world for 2019. The award was presented at the ITB global travel trade fair in Berlin, Germany. The second annual “Best of Top 100” Awards is a selection of the finest top 100 destinations selected by a panel of experts who reviewed sustainability success stories submitted by destinations worldwide. Guyana is nature in its original form. It is South America undiscovered. As the map to the right, created by researchers, shows, almost all of the country is still in it's natural state - whether it be lowland jungle, montage forest, savannah or mangrove. The country is part of the Guiana Shield, one of the only four pristine tropical forests remaining in the world. The Guiana Shield covers an area of 1.2 million square miles. Pristine Amazonian rain forests, immense waterfalls, vast open spaces, savanna's, mountains, and rivers are home to a density of biodiversity found nowhere else on the planet. |
This is not a budget destination. The truth is that the low volume of tourism in this part of the world makes it nearly impossible to develop economies of scale in the tourism sector. Extremely high transportation costs – driven by fuel and vehicle scarcity plus high maintenance costs – coupled with the remote nature of natural attractions, complicate things more. The new nature of Guyana’s tourism sector also serves to limit supplier competition that helps drive down costs in seemingly comparable tropical rainforest destinations. Lack of public transportation to remote destinations means you have to either take charter flights and/or arrange for motorboat or 4wd transfers to lodges.
Costa Rica sees about as many tourists on a busy weekend as Guyana receives all year long. Machu Picchu probably also receives about as many tourists in a day as Guyana receives in a year. This is a rare – and rarely-visited destination. For the extra expense to visit a place like Guyana, guests are rewarded with something particularly difficult to find these days… a place free of crowds, tacky gift shops, and jaded indigenous populations.
American Airlines has begun its new nonstop service from Miami to the country’s capital city of Georgetown. The new route will operate four days a week on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Other airlines that fly there are Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, Copa and Caribbean Airlines.
Guyana's climate is warm and tropical throughout the year. Generally, the best time to visit a region is during it's dry season:
