The Iberá wetland is famous for its great diversity and abundance of birds such as herons, storks, ducks, southern screamers, spoonbills, kingfishers, cormorants, snake-birds, jacana, rails, plovers and flamingos. Also plenty of caimans, capybaras, otters, and even a large population of marsh deer are found in these wetlands.
In the grasslands, rare bird species such as seed finches, monjitas, ochre breasted pipit and the strange-tailed tyrant can be easily seen in these areas. There is also a large population of the mysterious maned wolf and the greater rhea. In the forests you can still see toucans, blue-fronted parrots, lineated woodpeckers, anambés, manakins and black howler monkeys
The Natural Reserve Iberá still serves as a refuge for various species of wildlife that are threatened. In the forests and grassland of the region, one can find uncommon birds such as the saffron-cowled blackbird , the black and white monjita, seedeaters, the strange-tailed tyrant, the yellow cardinal, and the crowned eagle . Also, mammals such as the maned wolf. In the lagoons and swamps, species such as the jabiru, the marsh deer, and the neotropical otter can be found.
Conservationists have instigated projects to reintroduce species such as the giant anteater, pampas deer, collared peccary, guacamayo rojo and the jaguar.
When is the best time to visit Iberá and the Mesopotamia region? March to November are the nicest months since the weather is cool but still warm. The winter usually lasts just a few weeks during the months of July and August. From December to February is also good time to come for those who like: warm weather, waking up early in the morning to enjoy the coolest hours in nature and who enjoy a god nap during “siesta time”.
