Have you, and maybe some of your friends, always wanted to go to the Amazon, but you didn't want to do a standard tour or cruise, where everyone does the same thing each day? But maybe if it was just for you, or you and another person, you thought it might be too expensive? Or maybe you didn't know where you could go to in order to make sure you got a reliable and competent guide (have you read some of the horror stories in the reports at the South American Explorer's Club, where people would hire a guide who would get drunk and then make passes at the women or leave the clients to take care of themselves?)
It doesn't have to be that way.

- canoe/camp for 2-3 weeks
- search for different species of beetles
- learn how to make native handicrafts
- collect snake venom for pharmaceutical research
- learn jungle survival
- paint pictures of different plant species for a book
- do a combined sportfishing-regular nature itinerary
There is also a boutique cruise boat in Peru (the Cattleya) that only has 4 cabins and allows small groups of people to somewhat customize their four or 5 day cruise. The boat would still sail into the normal areas in the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve, but the focus of the activities can be customized to suit the group and can include things like cooking and Spanish classes.
The Anakonda cruise ship in Ecuador has what they call their "concierge service" , which allows clients to do a variety of things instead of the normal things that the rest of the group does. Of course those things have to be relatively close to the ship so that you can get back on board to continue the journey.
In Brazil, The Dolphin Lodge allows guests to have some flexibility in their itinerary. If guests want to hike more or do some camping or sportfishing (in season), then the normal itinerary can be altered.
If people prefer a cruise in Brazil, then they can get a boat for 2 or more people (either a typical riverboat where you would sleep in hammocks on the upper deck, or a boat with air-conditioned cabins) and cruise for a couple of days or up to a couple of weeks, doing as much hiking and/or canoeing as they desire. We have one person who is planning on bringing a group of stand up paddleboarders next year.
