But, unlike the World Cup, which had events all over the country, all of the Olympic events will be in the Rio area, so that is the only area that will have availability and pricing problems. |
Now this will also affect popular areas near Rio, such as Buzios, Paraty and Ilha Grande, but not areas further away.
| I've been told by operators in the Pantanal and Amazon that bookings are slow for the July-August period, so overcrowding won't be a problem there (unlike during World Cup). They think that maybe people are afraid of the Zika virus, though there have been no reported cases in the northern Pantanal and few in the Amazon. Most cases are in the large urban areas, not in the wilderness. |  |
It is kind of strange because a recent survey said that 96% of U.S. travelers said that the Zika virus was not going to affect travel plans. Maybe they weren't planning on going to South America or the biggest sporting event of the year anyway???
If you are planning on going to Brazil though, don't pass up the chance to visit some of the unique, world-class destinations while you are there. OK, skip the big northeastern cities like Recife, Natal and Fortaleza if you're worried about the virus. That is the area where most cases have been found. But that still leaves great areas such as:
Iguassu has had a few virus cases, but it will be winter time during the Olympics, and so there will be fewer mosquitoes at that time.
