Why not visit the spectacular pyramids near Trujillo and Chiclayo in Peru? Or Kuelap (the Machu Picchu of northern Peru) and all of the archeological treasures near it? Those areas are begging for visitors.
More and more I've been reading about problems with overcrowding at tourist destinations. While it's great that more people have the means and desires to travel, they don't all have to go to the same places. There are plenty of other magical places to visit in the world, and plenty of them are in South America. Instead of following friends to places they have been, why not go to some great places first and have the others follow you? I've read about too many tourists destroying beautiful beaches in Thailand and Mexico. There are plenty of beautiful beaches in Brazil where there are few people. I read an article today that said that Barcelona gets 30 million visitors a year and Venice gets 20 million (that's around 50,000 people a day, on average!). Workers at the Louvre walked out one day last month, saying that overcrowding in the museum made it unsafe and unmanageable to be there. Even at Machu Picchu, officials have limited the amount of time that people can be there and have spaced out visiting times to avoid overcrowding. But now they want to build a new airport in the Sacred Valley so that they can try to get more people to visit the site, even though environmentalists and archeologists say that would have a negative impact on other sites in the area. Why not visit the spectacular pyramids near Trujillo and Chiclayo in Peru? Or Kuelap (the Machu Picchu of northern Peru) and all of the archeological treasures near it? Those areas are begging for visitors. People have been dying on Mt. Everest this year because they are running out of oxygen while waiting in a long line to get to the top of the peak - only about 15 people can squeeze into the area at the top and the many others in line have to wait, using up their precious oxygen. Why not hike up Aconcagua in Argentina or the beautiful, snow-capped volcanoes in Ecuador? Those are pretty challenging too. People love waterfalls. Niagra Falls has attracted thousands a day for years. Even Iguassu Falls can get pretty crowded. But if you go to Kaieteur Falls, you might be one of about 10-20 people a day that go there and can have a beautiful setting almost all to yourself
